The Morning of The First Day

The first period was maths, a difficult subject for me as it involved listening consecutively for an hour. My hearing aids were already exhausting me from all the chittering and whirring, and it had only been 25 minutes. Everyone else was halfway through the term and practicing for an upcoming exam, whilst I'd just started.

I was partway through the first maths problem that I had gotten stuck on since the beginning of the lesson when a loud bang filled the classroom. I felt the vibrations and looked to what it could be; the door had been slammed open and a disgruntled yet cute boy walked through. The teacher just shook his head. "Sit next to Y/N for me, will ya?" The old teacher muttered. He grabbed the chair next to me and sat down, then stared straight ahead. I noticed his features through the corner of my eye: Black, curly hair, dark green eyes, and tanned skin with a scar running through his lip. I tried my best to carry on with the lesson, but I couldn't follow whatever was happening.

I hear a small buzz in my ear, but I ignore it. Then, tapping on my shoulder. I turn around to see the green-eyed boy staring at me with a small smile. "Hey, Y/N right? Got --- Class?" I listen to him, but I couldn't follow his words, thanks to his hand partially covering his face while he slouched. My hands shook as I remembered the boy on the bus after I told him I was deaf. Would he react the same way? "I'm...I'm sorry, but I'm deaf, I read lips, I'm really sorry," I whisper, tears threatening to spill. He looked surprised, then ripped out a paper in his book and scribbled quickly. He handed the paper to me and smiled, waiting patiently.

"Got any idea what's happening in this class?" I read the frankly disheveled note and smile. At least someone here is nice, I thought. I smiled at him and whispered the truth, "I have no idea what is happening". I must've whispered too loud, as the teacher looked at us, before moving on. The boy and I looked at each other and giggled. I wrote down on the note: "What's your name?". He scribbled down his name and gave me the paper. "Sebastian," It read. We continued to write back and forth, trying hard not to get caught. Unfortunately, the class ended and I went to my second lesson.

English was the second period, but it was pretty boring. Nothing much happened. After what felt like a day, the class ended and it was now break. I sat down by a bench, away from most people, and took my hearing aids out. They were starting to make my ears sore, not to mention my splitting headache from the overwhelming noise. I didn't really feel like eating, so I just sat in silence and thought. I've already made a friend...and perhaps an enemy. I stared at the trees above and sighed. This was a lovely school, the rest areas are filled with lush greenery and pretty walkways. I just wish I could hear properly sometimes. I wish I could hear the birds sing, hear the leaves whistle, or at least hear my own mother's voice properly. I closed my eyes and tried to listen. Nothing. I know I should be proud of who I am, and what a great community I'm in. I am, I suppose. I just wished people would be nicer, or at least treat me like a normal person. I am grateful for Sebastian though, he's the first person here to show me proper kindness that wasn't out of pity. I let out a content sigh and lay next to my back, drifting off.
