Zira woke to feel Scar's body wrapped around hers and his paw laid gently across her abdomen. Her mouth slowly spread into a grin and she yawned contentedly.
Scar's eyes fluttered open and he flashed a crooked grin at her.
"Good morning," he growled softly.
She growled and nuzzled up closer to him.
"Good morning."
He closed his eyes again and sighed a deep sigh. She sighed, too.
"So this is what peace and happiness feel like," she whispered.
"Yes, my dear. This is exactly what it feels like."
She laughed quietly and Scar's head perked up.
"What is it?"
Zira stopped laughing and a genuine smile replaced her grin.
"I never thought I could feel like this. I thought it was only for the good of heart."
Scar put his head on top of hers and whispered softly in her ear.
"The darkest of hearts can still find love, as long as it's with another dark heart."
He growled and nuzzled the back of her head. His soft mane tickled the side of her face and neck.
She laughed again and butted him playfully with the back of her head.
"Ow!"
He nipped the back of her neck and they both laughed hysterically.
As their laughter died down they could hear the sound of paws outside the cave. Scar stood up and looked down at Zira. She started to stand up but he nudged her back down with his snout.
"Stay put."
"But Scar..."
"Stay put!" he hissed.
Zira watched him defiantly but she did as she was told.
He began to make his way towards the entrance of the cave, his paws light on the stone floor.
Who could it possibly be now?!
He poked his head out of the cave and looked around.
He came face to face with Sarabi.
He jumped back a little, fully expecting to see his brother rather than her.
"What are you doing here?"
She eyed him carefully, as if she were trying to decide if he was a threat.
"You know why I'm here, Scar."
Her eyes shifted to the cave and he immediately tensed up.
"She's still here. I haven't let her out of my sight."
"I know that. It's time for her to leave."
Scar glared at her, his jaw clenched and his claws digging into the rock.
"Where is my brother? Shouldn't he be giving me this news?"
Sarabi glared back at him.
"I am the Queen, Scar. Mufasa's voice is my voice, so I will not tolerate disobedience from you or your mate."
Scar didn't move to fetch Zira. Instead he kept glaring at Sarabi.
"Why isn't Mufasa here?"
His suspicion ran deep, and Sarabi could immediately tell that he didn't trust her.
She quickly resorted to a new tactic.
"Scar, I know that times have been hard for you and Zira..."
"How would you know that!"
He snapped so quickly that Sarabi took a step backwards instinctively. Her ears flattened against her head and she bared her teeth.
"Calm down, Scar! I don't want this to escalate into something that cannot be reversed."
He growled once before composing himself. He sat down and watched her with calm green eyes.
"Better?"
His voice was heavy with sarcasm and bitterness.
She growled and looked back towards the cave.
"Are you going to get her or do I have to?"
Scar stood up again, this time with a wicked grin on his face.
"Does my brother know about this?"
He walked up next to Sarabi and she was the one to tense up.
"I told you, his voice is..."
"Your voice, yes. I was listening, you know. What I don't know is why you're so keen as to have my mate escorted out when my brother seemed fine with her staying for a little while."
He paused before continuing.
"Are you jealous of her?"
"Hardly."
He started a slow circle around her.
"Then what is it? Why the sudden change of heart from my brother?"
He stopped in front of her and his grin widened into a malicious smile.
"Unless... you haven't told him."
She lifted her head high and she looked down at him with a burning hatred.
"I am protecting my family. Mufasa will understand, I can assure you. Now go get Zira. We leave for the Outlands now."
His smile vanished and he looked back at the cave entrance.
"I'm sure she has already heard everything. She will be ready soon."
He started to walk back into the cave when he stopped suddenly. He turned his head to look back at Sarabi.
"What about the cub? I want to be there for her when my hei-"
He stopped himself and grinned sweetly at Sarabi. Then he continued.
"When my child is born."
Her face held no sympathy.
"You can go to the Outlands with her," she stated bluntly.
"Would I still have a place in the Pridelands?"
Sarabi sighed.
"I suppose you would. It is only the right thing to do."
Scar nodded and went into the cave.
Sure enough, Zira was already on her feet. Her eyes gleamed with rage and and her tail swished back and forth.
"I should've known that this wouldn't last. It was too good for me."
Scar smirked and leaned close, his breath tickling her ear.
"Oh believe me, darling. One day in the future it will last. I can guarantee it."
She grinned crookedly at him and he grinned back at her.
"Now let's take a little trip."
