The situation was tense.

It seems the taskforce were all at a breaking point. Trying to decide to side with L or more like Aizawa at this point, or Light.

L had said when he was alive that you have to put emotions aside in a case like this, if you want justice to be served. And that was proving true, Aizawa had already pushed his personal connections to the Yagamis aside in order to speak up about Light. Now the rest of the taskforce have to do the same. If they're willing? That's a whine different ballpark.

But that wasn't the only issue, the whereabouts of the second book is. You and L knew because you saw the exchange between Light and that Takada girl but you couldn't do much about it, as ripping it from their hands would definitely be suspicious.

Getting that book back was important, but with how the taskforce are at the moment, it might take a while for anything to be done about that.

Unless, you had some outside help.

Unbeknown to you and L, as you were busy doing things that could be considered unholy it was nightfall on the surface. That meant Nyx and Hypnos were out performing their nightly duty of keeping the sky dark and putting the mortals to sleep. And Hypnos had his eye on the group of mortals you and L were investigating while he was out. He knew he couldn't be spotted by the humans so running in there and snatching the book was out of the question. But maybe he could at least... locate it.

He felt like he owed something to L, having been one of the kindest shades to him. And something to you for being such a big help to the house of hades over the years.

So as night fell over the city, the god of sleep was taking a risk. Facing his fears of being out in the open where the Olympians could potentially spot him, all because he wanted to be a good friend to you and L and help the case.

His mother would probably freak out if she found out about this as well, being as protective as she is. So he was careful to do this while she was busy with the night sky and he was off putting the mortals to sleep.

Takada was completely blind to the fact there was a god watching her through her window as she wrote in the death note on lights behalf.

Hypnos watched, having found her through keeping an eye on Light.

"So that's where she's hiding it..." he mumbled to himself, watching her prepare a false bottom in her drawer for the book.

He recalled L telling him that Light had done the same thing. This was probably under Lights instructions. The cool night air made his one wing twitch when chills went down his spine. He could tell that with the weather this cold, Demeter was dearly missing her daughter Persephone while she was down in the underworld with hades.

Takada wrapped up her writing and slipped the book into its hiding spot, closing the drawer and locking it. She turned her attention to the TV where she continued the night by watching some show before bedtime.

"False bottom in the drawer... ok I can tell that to L and (y/n)" he told himself.

Turning to leave and catch up with his mother, he was about to jump from the balcony to float off when something hit the back of his head. Turning to face it, he was it was the curtains of an open window right into Takadas room. Right in front of it, was the desk.

He knew the work of  fates when he saw it...

"You three really like keeping your little brothers on their toes huh?"

This was his chance to reach in and snatch the book for you and L, but the fear of being caught was still in the back of his mind. Any other god would just reach in with no fear, they're gods after all. But after the wing incident he was very hyper vigilant about risks.

He often found it amusing that a literal god like himself had such human anxieties...

Standing on the balcony for a moment, he contemplated.

Should he take the risk and get the book for you and L? The fates offered him the chance. Or should he let you and L do it, he could tell you where it was and the two of you could continue as normal.

But if the book was in your possession now... that means no more people would die. And the underworlds over population problem would be stopped. Less deaths means less population problems. Tartarus was basically overflowing at this point anyway.

The sooner the deaths slowed, the better for the underworld.

Facing his fears, he decided he had to do it. The fates gave him the chance, he'd take it for the sake of the underworld and for you and L.

He peeked around the corner of the window, seeing Takada unaware and watching TV. If he reached in while she was there she'd definitely be able to see him. But... he WAS the god of sleep. All he had to do was cast a boon, and with the wave of a hand Takada was knocked out asleep on the sofa.

Climbing in the window quietly, he unlocked the drawer and pushed the false bottom up. Out slipped the death note, and he stuffed it into the belt of his toga for safe keeping. Placing everything back the way it was, he glanced over his shoulder and found Takada still asleep.

He'd only cast a regular sleep on her so she'd wake up the next morning and thing everything was normal, but that did mean she could wake up if something forced her too. So as quietly as possible he climbed back out the window and the second he was back on the balcony dove off the railing and was off to catch up with his mother.

The adrenaline he felt was insane. It may be a mundane task for any other god, but he'd just faced a massive fear.

"Holy hell that worked..." he sighed, in slight disbelief.

Floating in the clouds, he took the book into his hands and looked it over. His heart was racing.

"I just stole the death note... that just happened... gods I could have gotten caught! The Olympians would know about it if I got caught! I don't wanna encounter them again..."

To think that a mere shade could help a god overcome a fear. L really was a special person in the underworld.

"I gotta get this to L... I can't believe I just did that and it worked!" He told himself, stuffing it back in his belt and racing off to catch up with his mother.

That night you and L were too busy with other things to know what was going on. And by the time you'd both passed out from exhaustion and fallen into a deep slumber, you had no idea the book was back in the right hands.

L must really mean something to Hypnos if he was willing to take such a risk, and face his fears.
