Even wearing my favorite sundress and waiting for him to pick me up, I still couldn't believe Steve Harrington asked me on a date. I jumped when there was a knock at the front door. I took a shaky breath before standing up and straightening out my dress. I grabbed a cardigan on the way out of my room.

My legs were shaking so bad I felt like I was going to fall down the stairs. I had to take another deep breath before opening the door. My heart jumped when Steve smiled the second I opened the door.

"Hey," he said sweetly. "You look beautiful."

"Thanks," I said softly as I nervously tucked a piece of hair behind my ear.

"You ready to go?"

"I am."

I smiled when Steve gestured towards his car. I subconsciously straightened my dress as I started walking to his car. I had barely passed him when he reached over and grabbed my hand.

When we got to his car, he let go of my hand and opened the door for me. I slightly hesitated.

"It's okay," Steve whispered. "I promise this isn't a trick, Y/N. I want to take you out to dinner and spend the whole night getting to know everything about you."

"Why do you want to go out with me?" I couldn't help but ask. "I'm not like Nancy or your other friends and. . ."

"And that's exactly why I like you," Steve shrugged. "Nancy. . . Nancy wasn't good for me. But you? You are."

"But why me?"

"Despite how you see yourself, Y/N, I think you're amazing. Think about it. With everything that's been going on, I've seen how much you jump to help any way you can. You always protect the kids, even if it means putting yourself in danger. I mean, you came with Dustin and me to set up a trap for Dart. You protected the kids in the abandoned school bus when we were attacked by those demodogs without even a second of hesitation. You're a badass, Y/N. But on the other hand, you're extremely sweet. I've seen how careful you are with Eleven. You approach her, knowing she's a little skittish and nervous around people. Why wouldn't I want to go out with you?"

My face started to burn but I didn't care. I grabbed Steve's hand and gently squeezed it.

"Where do you want to go for dinner?"

I wasn't sure if he did it on purpose, but Steve took me to my favorite diner in town. We sat across from each other and made pleasant conversation. Steve ate a hamburger while I ate a chicken sandwich. We had just gotten our slices of pie when someone shouted for Steve's attention.

"Harrington!"

I slightly cringed as Tommy and Carol walked over to our table. I looked down at my dessert and could feel their judgy eyes on me.

"Why are you with her?" Carol asked.

"Careful," Steve warned, his voice dark.

"Seriously," Tommy laughed. "You break up with Nancy and start going out with this girl?"

"Don't be an ass," Steve harshly cut him off. "You know who this is."

"Yeah," he chuckled. "Which is why I'm wondering why you're with her."

Maybe it was to keep me from leaving or maybe it was to calm himself down but he reached over and grabbed my hand.

"Leave," Steve said through his teeth. Tommy opened his mouth to say something, but Steve cut him off. "Now."

I glanced at Tommy and Carol before turning my attention back to Steve. I saw the anger in his eyes and how tightly his jaw was clenched. I squeezed his hand, getting him to look at me.

"I'm so sorry about that, Y/N," he rushed out. "Tommy and Carol are gigantic assholes."

"Thank you," I whispered. "I really appreciate you standing up to your friends for me like that."

"You don't have to be so surprised," Steve teased. "I always stand up for the people I care about."

After Steve paid the check, we left. I looked over when he didn't pull out of the parking lot.

"Everything okay?"

"Yeah," he said, slightly nervous. "I just. . . I don't really want our date to end."

"Neither do I."

Steve smiled at me as he reached over and grabbed my hand. He intertwined our fingers as he pulled out of the parking lot. He continued holding my hand as we drove to the park.

During our first lap around the park, we didn't say anything. I played with my cardigan and Steve had his hands shoved in his jacket pockets. As we started our second lap, Steve pulled his hands out of his pockets. It took him until we got about halfway around before he finally grabbed my hand.

I lost track of how long we were walking. Most people would be weirded out by the fact that neither one of us said anything during our walk, but I enjoyed it. It actually took away any remaining feelings of awkwardness between us. We went around two, maybe three, more times before we broke the silence.

"We should probably head back," Steve whispered. "It's getting late."

Without saying anything else, we started to walk back to the car. Steve pulled on my hand, stopping me in front of his car. He turned me towards him and grabbed my other hand. Time seemed to slow down as he pulled me into his chest and leaned down, gently pressing his lips to mine.

Steve gave me every chance to break the kiss, but I didn't want to. I started kissing him back and we slowly deepened the kiss. Before either one of us could get too carried away, Steve slowly broke the kiss. Neither one of us could stop smiling. My head was still spinning.

"You know," I said, still trying to catch my breath. "I don't have to be home for another hour. Wanna keep walking around?"

Steve smiled as he reached his arm out for me to take. I let out a small laugh as I looped my arm around his.

"I just want you to know," he whispered, "I don't care what anybody says. I don't care if they think I could do better or you could do better. I want to be with you, Y/N."

"I want to be with you too, Steve."
