CHAPTER 1

[ Derek ]

I had refused to go to Jenna McHallan's birthday party a thousand times.

Normally, I would never pass up the opportunity to drink in the company of my close friends until we all passed out, but the difference between a normal birthday party and this birthday party was Jenna McHallan. It had only been a week since we broke up, and she was already starting to act like her crazy self by unleashing her revenge on me every single chance she got.

Me, being me, wanted to avoid her at all costs, but me, being me, wanted to get laid at all costs.

After weighing the pros and cons of my decision, I decided to show up at Jenna's birthday party just for the fun of it. There would be tons of people there, so it wasn't like I would actually cross paths with her ... or so I thought.

As soon as I stepped over the threshold to Jenna's luxurious home, I came face-to-face with the blue eyed brunette, in the flesh. She stared back at me with an expression that held no emotion whatsoever, and I tried not to show that I was scared out of my mind. I wasn't particularly worried about hurting her feelings, but I was definitely worried about her casting some kind of weird voodoo spell on me.

"Derek," she said, monotone.

I gave her a small smile that was way too forced to look real. "Jenna."

"What are you doing here?" She squinted at me and placed her hands on her hips, which was never a good sign.

I knew she was seconds away from turning into full-on psycho, but for some reason, I felt cocky today. "Oh! This isn't the virgin club?"

Jenna bit down on her bottom lip and her gaze narrowed even more. "I would have given you my virginity, you know, if you didn't break up with me so soon."

I smiled. "You say that like I'm supposed to feel bad."

"You should feel bad," she snapped back in a fiery tone. "I'm not letting you in."

"Didn't ask for your permission," I retorted as I pushed my way through the entrance and became engulfed into the swarm of people. As I continued to advance into the mass of sweaty bodies, I could faintly hear Jenna's voice calling my name, but I ignored it. I had decided I was going to enjoy this night without letting a stupid girl get in my way.

And so it goes.

By the time I met up with my friends and downed two handfuls of bitter alcohol, I was way too smashed to be coherent. It seemed as though I wouldn't be getting laid tonight, because I couldn't even tell the difference between sexy Ashley from math class and ugly Christie from chem.

The loud music blaring through the overhead speakers wasn't helping either. It made my head pound faster than it already was, and it made it impossible to hear my own thoughts.

"Hey!" One of my close friends, Maya, nearly shouted in my ear, worsening my pounding headache. "How you holding up? Did Jenna get to you yet?"

"She tried to, but I dodged her before she could start any of that 'we were meant to be' crap."

Maya twirled a lock of jet black hair around her finger, before using it to jab my chest. "Don't say I didn't warn you. Everyone warned you that she was a train wreck."

I could vaguely remember my friends telling me how clingy Jenna McHallan was, but it didn't register because I was probably distracted by her undeniable beauty and how the thing in my jeans was responding to her undeniable beauty.
