"She was the same age as him, yet she couldn't have been more different."

CARL WOKE AGAIN IN THE NIGHT with a crippling pain in his side that he had not experienced.  After turning his head towards his mom and dad, who were curled up in each other's arms, Carl tried to push away the pain that was now crawling up his side like a venom that had entered his body. The feeling felt like a monster; an unknown creature that shouldn't have been in close proximity, but still remained there anyway.

He stood up, gripping his side with his hand. After leaving the tent as quietly as he could, he headed to the water beaker beside the campfire. The area was illuminated with lights, which Wayne had managed to fix earlier in the week. While reaching up to grab a glass, the pain ebbed his side once more. Carl cried out, and nearly fell to the floor, until he found strong, gentle hands gripping his arms.

"Carl?" The voice said. "What are doing out here?"

Carl recognised the voice as Montana's. Once he had the strength to stand on his own, he turned to face her.

"Getting water," Carl responded. "Why are you out here?"

"I'm on guard duty with Dale," Montana said quietly. "Take your hand off your side."

"I can't," Carl said. "It's too painful."

Montana looked around at her surroundings before opening her mouth to speak again. "I can give you something to help with the pain, Carl. Can you walk to the RV?"

"I can, but why should I trust you?" Carl questioned.

"Well, you haven't given me any reason to trust you either, yet I'm here to help," Montana stated.

"You're an adult, I'm a kid," Carl replied. "You could  easily fight me."

"There is that possibility, isn't there," Montana said, sighing.

Carl looked up inquisitively at Montana's brown eyes. There was something so safe about them. Her stare was a promise; nothing was going to happen to you while she was there. It was this very thing that led Carl to follow Montana to the RV.

"Just heading in here for a minute, Dale," Montana stated. "Carl's side is hurting."

"Do Lori and Rick know he's out here?" Dale asked.

"They're asleep," Carl responded.

"I'll tell them when they're awake," Montana stated.
