REYNA

Alessandro's house was huge

Alessandro's house was huge. I heard that when he took over, he took everything from the previous Don-including his own home. It was obvious now that I was looking over the mansion. It was all white and stretched about as far as a public middle school. There were two palm trees in the front and bright lights that lit up the home.

"Let's go," Adriano grumbled. He seemed to be in a bad mood, but I didn't waste time asking him why. I knew that whatever it was, he wouldn't tell me. If I truly wanted to know anything around here, I would have to find out myself.

I followed Adriano into the home as if he were my own personal body guard. My brother's men greeted us as we entered the house. Immediately, I was hit with the smell of food that reminded me of a bakery.

"Reyna!" my mom cheered, walking over to me. It was the first time I had seen her walk on her own since she was shot. It earned a permanent smile to come across my face.

I quickly noticed the nurse that was following after her. She was an older woman, dressed head-to-toe in scrubs with her hair neatly tucked away in a low ponytail.

"Can I hug her?" I asked the nurse.

"Softly, please, ma'am," she said. Taking the nurse's words into consideration, I carefully wrapped my around my mother and hugged her, careful of her wound.

"Oh, my beautiful baby girl! We have so much to catch up on. You have no idea how many years I spent missing you," Mom said, smiling. It almost brought tears to my eyes.

I did spend a week with her, but she was mostly sleep. We didn't get to talk much because if she wasn't high on medication, she was knocked out. Most of the time I spent with her in the hospital, I only watched and allowed gratitude to consume me-because I did what I never thought would actually happen-I brought her home. Everyone had their doubts, but I never gave up.

"You look so alive, Mom," I said longingly.

It was true. Even when I had first seen her back at the brothel, her skin was never as tan, as bright, as glowing. Her smile was never as big, and even her hair looked saturated and healthy. The woman in front of me was the same woman that I hadn't seen since I left for school that Tuesday of my violin recital. She was right in front of me and I still almost couldn't believe it.

She laughed. "Reyna, baby, you have no idea. It's all thanks to you. I'm sorry you had to spend so much of your life alone. I know your Uncle was there to watch over you, but he still was never the easiest to take care of. I am so proud of you. You have no idea how proud I am."

Her words brought tears to my eyes. At the sight, my mother brought me in for another hug.

"Stop it! You're going to make me cry!" she laughed sadly. I chuckled at her words before pulling away and wiping away my tears with the back of my hand.
