Cassie's dad was really handsome. 

The kind of handsome that made people treat him differently. 

As expected her mom used to get really upset with him for flirting. 

Which wasn't fair. It wasn't his fault. 

He really loved her. 

He loved them all. 

Her dad always wanted Cassie to become a professional ice skater.

And for a long time, she thought she might because she was a natural. 

But after a while her dad couldn't afford lessons, so he stopped encouraging her.

When she hit puberty her mom replaced her dad and became her best friend.

Both of her parents boosted her confidence, feeding her compliments about her appearance. 

And during puberty, her body didn't just change... How everyone in the world treated her did too.

Her uncle Ted would hug her a little too tight to be family and his age.

Family friends would subtly flirt, making her extremely uncomfortable. 

And even her grandfather would touch her in ways that were not necessary at all. 

Their family wasn't perfect. 

At all.

Her mom had, you know, some issues.

And her dad struggled to keep a steady income. 

So her parents fought a lot.

In the way, all parents kind of fight.

Except for the night before she started ninth grade.

Her mom had told her that her father was just being irrational and that he had jealousy issues. 

But in reality, it was because he couldn't keep a steady job. And the responsibility of being a father was not what he wanted. 

Being a father was too much work.

Even though that was the truth, Cassie heard a story that her mother cheated and that is why her father left.

Hearing that at first, she was angry with her mom.

She resented her for being such a hypocrite.

But then she realized her dad wasn't perfect.

He used to visit them on weekends... But, eventually, it became every other week.
