✩Linh's POV✩

I sat down on a damp smooth rock in the middle of a crystal clear pond and closed my baby blue eyes, focusing on the quiet ripples of the water as tadpoles swam around me. The sunrise reflected off the clear pool, giving it a cheery glimmer. I pictured a wall of water around me, guarding me from any possible danger, lifting my arms. The waters around me rose, higher and higher until there was a small wall of protection.

I frowned slightly. Not good enough. I closed my eyes again, imagining the water around me closing in, forming a roof over my head and shielding me and my friends. I lifted my arms again, but the wall of water only rose a couple inches.

I took a deep breath and channeled my mental energy to my mood, filling my mind with images of pouncing kittens and happy dolphins. I smiled and tried again. No luck.

After hours of trying, my arms grew tired and my mood withered. By the time the sun was high in the sky, I was ready to kick something. I wasn't usually this frustrated! But right now I felt about as pessimistic as my brother.

I glared at a happy tadpole playing with its siblings in the water, and using the last of my energy to splash it with water. I kicked the wet rock I was sitting on and leaned back, resting my back on the cold surface of the stone.

"Linh!! Linh!!" a loud voice yelled from the distance. I sat up, looking around to see a blonde girl with light blue beads braided into her hair to match her ice blue eyes that always seemed to have a spark of energy in them, an undying flame that would only go out when the world ended.

"Marella?" I said, a smile playing at my frustrated expression at the sight of her. She always seemed to show up when I wanted her the most but didn't know it until she arrived.

"That's me!! Tam said you were kicking your favorite rock, so I tried to make custard bursts, but they didn't work out." Marella held out a plate of burnt custard bursts that were so crispy and hard they might as well have been rocks.

I couldn't help but laugh at Marella's failed attempt to bake. "What happened to them?" I giggled.

"I wanted to use my Pyrokinesis, to speed things up," Marella admitted bashfully, a light pink color coating her cheeks. "But that was a pretty bad idea."

"It's fine, Marella," I reassured her, touching her shoulders with my hands and turning her towards me. Her ice blue eyes flickered with embers, burning higher and higher as the blush coating her eyes brightened.

"It was really sweet of you to make me brownies," I told her. Marella snorted.

"It really wasn't a problem," she answered me humbly. I smiled anyway.

"Still," I said, taking her chin and resting it in my hand. "Thank you."

Marella inched toward me, gazing into my light blue eyes with silver freckles like they were the most interesting thing in the world. Her mouth gaped open as we pulled each other closer, my heart racing a million miles per hour as-

Marella pulled away, turning bright red. "Why were you kicking your rock, anyway?"

I smiled sweetly, gushing over the fact that she cared enough to ask. "I was just a little frustrated."

Marella frowned sympathetically. "Why?"

"I was trying to do something with my ability, but I just couldn't," I sighed.

"Well, that's not the rock's problem, that's the water's!!" Marella pointed out. "Hey, I have an idea."

"To help me work my ability the right way?"

Marella grinned deviously. "No, to punish the disobedient water. Fuck that stupid water for not listening to you! That's their problem!" Marella raised her hands and a flame ignited in her palms, blessing her with the light from the embers that made her look like she was glowing.

Marella lowered her into the pool, until she was up to her waist in water. She tossed back her blonde braids and dipped her hand in the water. I expected it to go out, but as Marella grunted and struggled, the flame burned anway. Within seconds, the water was bubbling and steaming and boiling itself, fish slowly floating up to the surface with their white bellies facing the clear blue sky.

Marella grinned at me again. "Now the water knows not to mess with you."

I hopped onto the rock in the middle of the pond, carefully avoiding the steaming moat of water surrounding it. I channeled all of my energy into the hot water, sending my consciousness into each droplet. The water surged upward, forming a wall that was taller than me to shield me.

Marella clapped with delight. "Perfect! I knew you could do it!! All you needed was the water to fear for their nonexistent life!"

I chuckled. "No, I don't think that was it."

Marella raised her eyebrows. "Really?"

I lowered the wall of water to see a drenched blonde girl dripping from head to toe in water, which was now room temperature. I jumped into the pool and waded up to Marella, who was now blushing furiously as she stared into my eyes.

"It was because you were there, Marella." I smiled at her. I leaned in and kissed her lips, which tasted like watermelon bubblegum and were sweet and soft and gentle. She gripped my neck with both her hands and clasped them together, giving me a little personal necklace that felt like it was made especially for me.

"Do you like me?" Marella asked, her ice blue eyes twinkling with anticipation.

"Of course," I said, pulling her in to kiss her again.
