Song in title- You Get Me so High
by The Reflections
—~~••~~—I didn't know how to act around Cole anymore. I know we kissed but this Ronin situation and whole maze thing is different. My heart skipped a beat every time he was near, and I felt like I was walking on eggshells, not knowing what to say or do. It was all too much to process.
"Y/n?" Cole's voice pulled me from my thoughts, making me jump slightly.
"Yeah, what's up?" I quickly turned to face him, trying to keep my composure, but my heart was racing.
"Sensei needs the team," Cole replied, his voice calm, but I could see the concern in his eyes.
"Oh..." I nodded, trying to act normal as I moved past him quickly, avoiding his gaze. I could feel the tension hanging in the air, and just as I thought I was out of the conversation, I felt his hand grab mine, stopping me in my tracks.
"Did I do something?" Cole's voice was softer now, laced with confusion.
"What?! No!" I panicked, my voice rising unintentionally, causing him to look even more puzzled. "I'm sorry if I'm acting weird." I fidgeted with my sleeve, unable to look him in the eyes.
"You can tell me what's bothering you," Cole said thoughtfully, his voice full of concern as he took a step closer.
I hesitated, not knowing how to respond. "I... I don't know if I can, actually," I said slowly, my voice trailing off as I searched his face for any sign that he might understand.
His brows furrowed in confusion. "What's wrong?"
"I just... don't know how you would react," I confessed, my voice barely above a whisper, and I could see his interest shift, like he was determined to get to the bottom of it. But how could I explain everything without making things even messier?
He deserves to know, but maybe not the whole truth... I thought to myself, struggling with the weight of the decision.
"When we were in the cave," I started, still unsure of my words, "I saw the team in their old age. I saw you, Cole. You weren't a ghost." I smiled, trying to mask the knot in my stomach, but the moment I said it, Cole's eyes widened in disbelief.
"I wasn't?" he asked, his voice filled with wonder. Before I could respond, he leapt to his feet, his face lighting up with excitement. "I'm gonna get my body back! I have a future!" He scooped me up into a tight hug, spinning me around in joy. "You have no idea how happy I am right now!"
I laughed nervously, my heart fluttering from the sudden closeness. He set me back down, and for a moment, we just stood there. He was still beaming, but then he paused, looking at me with deep gratitude.
"Thank you, Y/n." he said sincerely, his voice warm.
I plastered a fake smile on my face, nodding quietly as he ran off, his joyful energy infectious. But as soon as he was out of sight, I buried my face in my hands, letting out a frustrated sigh.
What am I doing? I thought, leaning against the nearby wall for support. The weight of everything was pressing down on me, and I felt like I was drowning in it.
"Y/n?" Jay's voice broke through my thoughts, and I whipped around, forcing a cheerful expression onto my face.
"Oh, hey, Jay! What's up?" I said, trying to sound upbeat, but I could tell my fake smile didn't quite reach my eyes.
