Welcome to Hawkins
was what the sign read as I drove past it. I noticed the rolling green hills and small, cute houses along the side of the road. I didn't see many people out and about.
"Oh I cannot wait for some nice, peaceful time here this summer." I let out a sigh.
"Hawkins? Peaceful?" Dustin was pulling out something from his backpack. "We can only hope it is." He muttered with a dark look in his eye.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
But he didn't answer me, instead he put the walkie-talkie he pulled out of his backpack up to his mouth.
"This is Gold Leader, returning to base. Do you copy? Over." He said into the walkie-talkie. There was no response. After 30 seconds, Dustin repeated himself. "This is Gold Leader, returning to base. Do you copy? Over."
He waited some more.
"I repeat: This is Gold Leader, returning to base. Do you copy? Over." His voice was getting impatient now.
"I repeat..." Dustin took in a long breath. "This is GODDAMN GOLD LEADER-"
"-Dustin!" I interrupted him.
"What?" He looked over.
"Relax! For goodness' sake." I blew a breath.
"I'm in range. They - my friends - should be answering." He put down the walkie-talkie sadly.
"Hey... you've been away for, what, a whole month? Maybe they just... forgot." I offered, even though that excuse tasted lame even in my mouth.
"Yeah you're probably right." He muttered, putting away the walkie-talkie.
It was only twenty minutes or so before we reached to Dustin's house. I put my car into his garage and finally stepped out.
My legs felt so sore because we had been sitting for so long. I rubbed the tiredness out of my eyes and we took our suitcases out of the trunk.
I walked into the house and noticed it was pretty clean and big.
"So... your mom won't be here at all for the entire summer?" I asked.
"No most probably not." Dustin answered. "C'mon, let me show you your room." He said pointing deeper into the house. I noticed this house was a rambler, meaning there were no separate stories, but all the rooms were on one floor. Interesting.
I nodded and followed him deep into the house where we came across a hallway. He led me down the long hallway with a series of doors on either side. Once we reached the end of the hallway there were two doors opposite of each other.
"This one is mine." He pointed at the door on the left. "And this one is yours." He opened the door on the right.
"Thanks." I said, walking into my room. It was dim and spacious. There was a bed on the far left corner, right beside a window. There was also a desk on the right. I noticed a door that led to the bathroom as well as one that was probably the closet. "It's nice." I told Dustin, setting my suitcase down.
"I'll just unpack a bit and then we can have an early dinner?" Dustin suggested. "I'm pretty sure my mom left some food for us."
"That sounds good." I answered, walking further inside my room while Dustin went back to his own room.
I first walked over to the closet and set my suitcase down. I hadn't brought too many clothes, but they were enough to fill the closet sufficiently. I probably might have to go shopping some time in the summer
