Word count: 1.3k

Your knee bounces up and down as the anticipation sets in. Bucky Barnes, you're fling is coming back to town. You agreed to meet him only because you have to end things. You're gonna tell him you're engaged, he's gonna be happy for you. The two of you will talk for a bit, then go your separate ways.

And that'll be it. The story of you two will be over. You'll maybe even invite him to the wedding. It's kinda late notice since it's in two months, but maybe he'll be able to make it.

If he can't it's not the end of the world. You'll still get married and live a happy life with your husband.

"Hey," you hear and you watch as Bucky sits on the bar stool across from you. "Hi," you say and you almost forget about your plan. Almost.

It still lingers in your mind which is good. You'll be able to follow through with it.

"It's been a while," you say and he nods his head. "386 days to be exact," the fact that he knows shocks you, but you don't let it show.

You don't know exactly how it happened, but you ended up back at his place. The door shut behind you and you felt him wrap his arms around your waist and pin your back against his chest. As soon as his lips made contact with your skin, you pulled away. "I'm sorry, I can't do this," you say.

"Did I do something wrong? Did I hurt you?" His concerned tone makes you want to smile, but you can't. He steps closer to you and puts his arm out to touch you. "I'm engaged," you blurt out and his hand falls back to his side.

Instead of being happy or cheerful like you thought he would, he's confused. His expression is mixed with confusion and another emotion you haven't seen in a long time. It's rage.

"It's been a year," he finally speaks and you nod your head. "When you know, you know, right?" You shrug and he runs his hand through his hair.

"Why'd you come here with me then?" He asks and you shrug as you look down at your feet. "Answer me."

"I didn't know how you'd react and I thought it would be better if we were alone," you quietly say and Bucky leans against the wall as he looks at you— no, glares at you.

"What do you want me to say?" He throws his arms up before letting them fall back to his sides and you flinch.

"I don't know, congratulations, maybe," your tone comes out harsher as you grow more frustrated with him. He laughs without humor and your roll your eyes. "Why would I congratulate you? Hmm?"

"Maybe because we're friends—"

"Oh that's what we are? Friends. Nothing more. I don't know if you know this or not, but you usually don't fall in love with someone you see as a friend," he says and you make a confused expression at him. "What? Yea you do— what?"

"I've been in love with you for the past few years. So when you tell me you're getting married, I'm not gonna be to happy about it," his voice breaks a little and you feel upset, but brush it off.

"I'm sure that's what you tell every other girl that you fuck so they don't get married and continue to sleep with you," you snap and it's his turn to look confused.

"What other girls?" But you're not falling for it. You're not falling for his trap, there's no way you are. "Please. I know that you have a "best girl" in every town you stop in so you're not lonely," you cross your arms across your chest as you argue with him.

"Yea maybe like seven years ago, but y/n, you're the last girl I've had sex with in a long time," he says and your eyes drop to the ground before going back up to him. "I'm not buying it," you turn around and head for the door, not wanting to be around him anymore.

"I'm not lying y/n," he says and you stop walking. "Truth is, I don't even have to stop here anymore, my business in this town has been over for the last few years. I come here to see you. I'm a fool for not telling you how I feel about you sooner—"

"Yea, you are," you say and leave.

He stands in his house, alone. He thinks about running after you, but what good will it do. He'll just find a way to make you upset again. So he stands by himself, wishing he hadn't let you go.

You're sitting in a room by yourself in your wedding dress. There's a few minutes until you walk down the aisle and get married. You wonder if Bucky showed.

After your fight with him, you still sent him an invitation. He told you he might make it depending on where he is. You still wanna see him. After all, this is the happiest day of your life.

A knock on the door catches your attention and when you open it, Bucky stands there. "You made it," you let out a sigh of relief.

"I couldn't disappoint my best girl, now could I?" He asks with a smirk and a familiar glint in his eyes.

You close the door behind him and give him a hug. He picks you up and spins around in a circle. "God you look absolutely beautiful," he says and you blush.

"Thank you, you look beautiful too," you say and he chuckles.

"I just wish it was me you were marrying," he whispers quietly and you barely catch it. "I'm sorry I can't stay."

"What why?" You frown as you frame the sides of his face with your hands and he lets out a sigh as he nuzzles into your palms. "I can't watch you get married," he says and you look down as you drop your hands from his face.

Your maid of honor comes in the room and stops when she sees you and Bucky. "Uh, it's time, y/n," she says and you nod your head.

"Congratulations, doll," Bucky says as he leans down and kisses your forehead.

You quickly walk out of the room and watch as your bridesmaids walk down with the groomsmen. Then it's your turn to walk down. You make it to the end and stand in front of your fiancé.

The ceremony went by smoothly, you said your vows, and now, it was time to say I do.

"Y/f/n, do you take this man to be your husband, in sickness and health, till death do you part?"

You stare at your fiancé as a million thoughts go through your head. Turning your head to the end of the aisle, you see Bucky standing there with a broken expression. His eyes are watery and his lip trembles.

"Y/n?" Your fiancés voice rings in your ears, but doesn't catch your attention. "I'm sorry," you say as you look back at him. "I can't."

There's a collective amount of gasps among the crowd as you turn and run towards Bucky. His eyes widen as you grab his hand and run out of the building.

"What're you doing?" He asks with a laugh.

"I'm running away with you, what does it look like?" You ask with a laugh.

He opens the door of his car for you and you get in. He gets in the driver seat and leans over the center console to kiss you. "God I love you," he says against your lips.

"I love you too," you whisper. He smirks and kisses you again.
