31| Nawal"Are you really sleeping right now? It's the middle of the day." I wasn't going to sleep but I was so lazy right now and everything he told me just drained me completely. No matter how strong your relationship with your husband is and no matter how much you trust him, it's never easy to hear him say that he loved another girl. I used to call the storybook girls over dramatic whenever they cried over their lover telling them that he loved someone else before them even if he isn't seeing them anymore but now I get it.
"I'm drained, Ahad." I whined against him and he ruffled my hair playfully.
"Go and get dressed. We're going out. I've got the entire day off since I skipped work so might as well put it to good use." He patted my back, encouraging me to get up and I begrudgingly left him and the warmth he provided. Winter had officially started in Lahore as well so it was quite cold but being with him always made me feel warm.
"Where are we going though?" I asked him to get an idea of how I should dress but he just shrugged.
"Wear something warm." I took out a deep blue sweater dress that reached my knees and had a turtle neck and paired it with black skinny jeans. Ahad said he was already dressed and just changed his suit jacket for a leather jacket and led us out.
"Do you know how to ice skate?" He questioned and I internally gasped thinking of what he had in mind.
"Are we going to ice skate?! I'm so excited!" I stopped myself from jumping up and down though I totally could have done it. He softly chuckled at my reaction and interlaced our hands together on my lap. Something about him driving with one hand as he held my other hand was so hot and I bit my lip.
Skating rinks weren't very common in Pakistan and only a few were found in each city. The only ice rink I knew of was inside a Mall in Lahore so drove there and walked inside, our hands still together. The mall wasn't very crowded as it was a Wednesday which is a working day so we didn't have any trouble.
The ice rink area, however, was a different story. It was packed with kids and a few adults skated around on the rink amongst the group of kids, wearing uniforms so I guessed they were the trainers and the kids were their students. We paid for two pairs of skates and slid them on. I was done first so I quickly got onto the rink, not waiting for Ahad. I took skating classes when I was a teenager because I had a 'phase' where I was obsessed with skating. I wasn't sure if I could still skate well so I gripped the metal bars for support as I walked around at first, slowly getting into the flow.
Just now remembering that I was here with my husband, I turned back around to see Ahad struggling with skating. I smoothly went over to him and held out my hands and he grabbed them as I led him around.
"This is funny, usually the guy helps the girl in skating but here it's the other way around." I chuckled as I continued leading us both until he got the hang of it.
"Don't make fun of me. Its been a while since I've tried." He glared but that made me laugh harder because he was going so slow and cautiously like he'd fall even when I was holding him.
"Okay, how about you try and I skate around you so I can steady you if you're about to fall?" I freed his hands and skates next to him as he tried on his own. Only a few scares and he was skating around like a professional, completely leaving me behind. Since he was taller, I was the one catching up to him and I tried to skate past him but he stopped me by wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling my back into his chest.
"Ahad, we're in public. Why do I always have to remind you?" I sighed but didn't protest against him.
"I just love it when you get all riled up when I do something in public when we both know you're enjoying it." He whispered in my ear, his lips only a hairsbreadth away. Feeling cheeky, I pretended to turn around to face him but fled his arms when he loosened his hold on me. I was skating fast and I kept on looking back to see where Ahad was as I giggled. Irresponsibly, I didn't check to see where I was skating off to and ended up running into someone as we both fell upon impact.
"Nawal!" Ahad shouted as he came over as fast as he could and pulled me up. I had crashed into a practicing child so he pulled her up too as I got onto my knees in front of her and inspected her for any injuries. She was wearing a proper gear with elbow and knee pads and a helmet so she wasn't hurt, thankfully. I, however had fallen on my back and hit my head bad on the ice.
"I feel like I'll pass out." I clutched my head between both my hands as Ahad put his arm around my shoulder and carefully led us out to a bench. He examined me to see if I was hurt and I had two scratches on my right elbow and my back felt like it had been cracked. I slowly blinked to push back the momentary darkness that had taken over my vision and dropped my head back.
"I think I've cracked my skull, Ahad." I grunted in pain and he just massaged my head.
"You should've been more careful, jaan. Anything could've happened." He softly told me and I closed my eyes as he pressed the back of my head.
"Feeling better?" I hummed in response, encouraging him to continue.
"Ahad, I know what will make it better. Let's get some ice cream." I opened one eye to see his expression and he was face palming as he smiled and said something like 'Allah, yeh ladki' and I grinned.
*Allah, this girl.
We got two cones of ice cream. Chocolate for me and mango for him and sat down on free chairs as we ate. We occasionally tasted each other's ice cream as well and Ahad being himself said that his ice cream got sweeter once I tasted it and I laughed saying that mine just got bitter when he ate it. Trust me when I say he sulked for the rest of the time until I had to hug it out with him.
We were walking around when someone called my name from the back. We both turned around to see a two guys walking towards us.
"Faizi!" An instant smile spread on my face as I saw Faiz, my friend from high school and university. We both shook hands as the guy next to him and the guy next to me both looked confused.
Faiz had been my friend in high school and showed me around on my first day because Sarah had decided to skip school on the first day. We both genuinely got along and somewhere between the years I had a crush on him too before it faded away just as quick as it happened. On my first day in University, we both had coincidentally met again because we lost contact in between and were surprised to see both of us attending the same university. After university ended, we lost contact again and I was only seeing him now.
"This is my friend, Noman." He introduced and I politely nodded at his friend.
"This is my husband, Ahad." I introduced my husband and he shook hands with both of them.
"You got married? Man, I wish we had contact. I could've attended then." He whined and I laughed at his behavior. He was always the over dramatic friend of mine, despite being a guy.
"Okay, we should go now so you can spend time with your husband. Later!" He enthusiastically waved me a goodbye and I waved back.
"Who was he?" Ahad asked, sporting a forced smile.
"He was my high school friend, Faiz. We studied in high school and university together." I said as I reminisced our time together. It was always fun with him. "Are you jealous?" I teased as I nudged him.
"I'm not."
"You totally are!" I smiled wide.
"Why would I be jealous? I know I have no competition." He shot me a smug grin and I smiled back as we went home.
