Chapter 16: ConflictRene POV
Janice and I were in Sherry's room until Aries came back, I guess. Sherry did a quick check up on us to make sure we were alright.
"Thank you, Sherry," I said. Sherry nod and walked back into the bathroom putting her first aid kit away. She came back looking at the both of us.
"Would you girls like to freshen up?" Sherry asked. I knew my cheeks was burning from embarrassment.
"I certainly love to take a shower, I know I smell. You can smell it can you?" Janice asked Sherry.
"Um, I was just asking because you have dried mud on your face." Sherry nervously smiled. Sherry looked at me to save her.
"You do have mud everywhere. Especially all in your hair."
She looks at me in horror and run to the bathroom checking on her hair. "Please tell me you some shampoo and conditioner?" Janice asked.
"Yup. Inside of the cabinet to the left. There are fresh towels and some body wash too." she replied. Janice wasted no time to get into the bathroom to shower all the dirt and muddiness away. I turn my attention to back to Sherry which she was on her computer at the desk.
I took a moment to gather my thoughts before posing my question.
"Why did you save us, risking your life?" I asked, genuinely curious about her motives. Sherry looked up from her computer, her head cocked slightly to the side as if contemplating her response. For a moment, I thought she might ignore my question, but then she stood up, drawing my attention fully.
"I believe Aries would prefer you to be alive," she replied simply, her voice calm yet firm. Her answer struck me with its directness. It seemed she was loyal to Aries, or at least understood his wishes enough to act decisively in our favor.
"But why risk so much for us?" I pressed further, wanting to understand her perspective better.
Sherry sighed softly, her gaze thoughtful as she walked over to the window, peering out at the night sky. "There are few things worth risking everything for," she began, her tone reflective. "Some of us find those reasons in loyalty, duty, or sometimes even in unexpected bonds that form amidst chaos."
"I owe him anyway after all I've been through. He's a good man," she said.
"If it wasn't for him and others, I wouldn't be what I become." From the look on her face, she was reminiscing her past.
"May I ask how?" I questioned. She sighs and nod.
"I guess I should start from the start. I wasn't born a vampire, I was a human. As I got older, I got married at twenty to a wonderful man who was four years older and was a preacher. Fast forward to when I was twenty-four I was a nurse working the late nights. It was 1921, the year tuberculosis were among us. I was in the hospitable treating the ill patients with it. When my shift was about to end a man that looked mysterious was dressed in all black." She took a moment closing her eyes and reopen them.
"He asked me where is the bathroom. I gave him directions and went my way. Something about him threw me off. I was down the steps and I can feel something was following me. My walking sped up as I heard footsteps. Eventually, I got to the exit thinking I was safe."
I was jogging in the parking lot to get to my husband until someone grab me from behind. My screams were concealed so was my movements." Sherry let out a dry laugh without humor.
"I thought he was injecting me with something, but little did I knew. That's when it register in my brain that needles didn't feel like that. My husband saw me and ran towards me to save me. He pushed me towards my husband, I turned looking at his face seeing he didn't look human. Fear struck me as I saw his canine like mouth stained with my blood. My husband did the best he could to defend me but died when the creature ripped his throat out. After that, I passed out, woke up in some fancy room with the creature. That's when I found out what he was and I. He said I had the disease in my blood and I should be grateful to have eternal life."
