Chapter 2

Once alone, Kim Jae's thoughts turned to his mother. He found himself longing for the sound of her voice, a comfort he had once taken for granted. He rummaged through his belongings for his old flip phone—a relic he had despised in his past life. Eagerly, he dialed her number, holding his breath as the phone rang.

It didn't take long for her to answer. "Hello?" Her voice, gentle and soothing, washed over him like a balm.

"Eomma," he choked out, the word heavy with emotion. His voice, thick with sorrow, instantly alarmed her.

"Jae-soo ah, tell Eomma what's wrong," she urged, her voice laced with concern. He could hear the distress in her tone, reminiscent of darker days during his childhood.

Hearing her voice, a dam broke within him, and tears streamed down his face. As he wept, his mother whispered words of comfort, trying to soothe him despite not understanding the depth of his pain.

"I miss you, Eomma," he sobbed, his heart aching with regret and longing.

"I miss my baby, too. Why don't you come home soon? Mum will prepare your favorite food," she offered warmly, her words stirring a mix of happiness and further tears in Jae-soo.

"Mn," he responded softly, comforted by her promise. His mother, sensing his fragile state, skillfully shifted the conversation to lighter topics, gradually drawing him out of his sadness. They ended the call with Jae-soo feeling a renewed sense of purpose.

Alone again, he gazed out at the starless sky, reflecting on his second chance at life. This time, he resolved to cherish those who had always been honest with him, to be kinder, and to steer clear of the mistakes that had once led him astray. A fresh start lay before him, filled with potential for redemption and newfound joy.

Kim Jae-soo

Most of my school memories were blurred at the edges, lingering in the fog of my past life. It often took concerted effort to dredge up the details. This morning, the persistent ringing of my phone alarm pulled me from the depths of sleep. I reached out to silence it, noting the stark simplicity of my study table—just a lamp and a half-mirror where textbooks should have been.

"Kim Jae," Yuya Tomi called out gently, his voice a soft intrusion into my groggy awakening. I groaned, sitting up as the details of my surroundings slowly coalesced. Yuya stood by my bed, his presence marked by a comforting familiarity. He was a bit chubby, with a distinct cinnabar mark on the left side of his lips. The pink hue of the mark, a sign of low fertility, never seemed to bother him.

"We're heading to our classes," he informed me, his tone casual as he glanced back towards the doorway where I presumed the others were waiting. "Do you have a class this morning as well?"

His question nudged me into action. I turned off the blaring alarm and rubbed the sleep from my eyes, trying to connect with any memory of my class schedule. Finding none, I simply nodded, hoping my vague recollection didn't betray my confusion.

"Alright, but remember to lock up," he added before turning to leave.

"Thank you," I managed to say, my voice still thick with sleep. Yuya paused at the threshold, giving me a nod that seemed to carry a mix of reassurance and concern before he exited the room.

With a resigned sigh, I rose from my bed and shuffled toward the closet where I stored my school bag. Assuming it held my class schedule for the semester, I unzipped it, only to find it stuffed with beauty products alongside a notebook and a glitter pen.
