Pumpkins

I adjusted my grip on my backpack, heading towards the flat. I was super hungover today after the halloween party last night, but still managed to drag myself to class somehow- literally nobody else in our friend group had done, so I was alone.

I trudged down the path, littered with orange leaves, thinking about how when I got back i'd make myself some toast then collapse into bed.

As I walked up the steps towards the flat building, I saw Weston and Sam sitting outside the front of the building on the grass, carving pumpkins. I paused, and they noticed me- and waved.

I walked over to them and sat down, noticing that their conversation abruptly ended when I was in earshot.

I found myself wondering what they'd been talking about when I sat down, throwing my backpack down on the grass next to me. I didn't dare glance at Weston. Last night after we got a lift home Weston and I didn't say anything to each-other, and everyone had just gone to bed. I hadn't seen him since we...

I could feel myself blushing and I hadn't even looked at him.

Sam rolled a mini pumpkin over to me. "Here ya go." He smiled, and I picked up a knife they'd bought and started carving a face into the pumpkin.

"How was class?" Sam asked me. " I'm surprised you managed to drag yourself there, you were so drunk last night -but to be fair I think we all were."

My pumpkin was not going too well, the face looked pretty jagged already. I focused intensely on trying to fix it. "Class was OK, thanks." I said.

"I actually don't remember anything past like, 10pm, I swear to god." Weston said casually, making me look up at him. I wasn't sure if he was joking or not. "Anything?" I found myself blurting out.

"Uh.." He said, looking over at me, an awkward smile on his face. Before he could say whatever he was or wasn't going to say, Sam burst out laughing. I looked at him and saw he was looking at my pumpkin from over my shoulder.

"HEY!" I yelled, grabbing it. "He's not ready!" I defended, turning away and continuing it. The knife slipped in my hand a little and the pumpkin's face fucked up even more. "Shit!" I exclaimed.

"Oh, isn't that Isabelle?" Weston said, and we all looked over to see her walking along with who I recognised to be Toby.

"Oh yeah, and that's Toby," Sam added, "I met him at the party he's super cool."

I considered for a second speaking up to say what a jerk Toby was, and before I could we all completely stopped talking as we stared at them.

They hugged tightly for several seconds, Isabelle up on her tip-toes, then when they let go of each-other she gave him a kiss on the cheek. Then she walked up the stairs with a bounce in her step, into the building. She didn't see us.

"Oh, shit." I said, breaking the silence.

"That could have just been... friendly?" Weston suggested, and Sam and I both shot him a look.

"Should we tell Olivia?" Sam asked, as Kalynn came out the front door to us, holding some cups.

I shrugged, and Weston looked at me. I looked back at him. I thought about how he'd kissed me as soon as our eyes met and my stomach felt like it flipped.

"I got you guys hot cocoa." Kalynn said, handing us all one. "It's way too cold for you to be out h- Jesus Anais, that's scary." She said, looking at my pumpkin with wide eyes.

I laughed, "I was going for cute, actually." Then she laughed too. She made Weston move up so she could sit down, and he scooted up right next to me. I fiddled with my hands awkwardly, glancing at him.

"That is pretty bad." Weston said, turning to me. The others kept talking among themselves, and I zoned out of whatever they were talking about.
"Oh shut up," I rolled my eyes. "I was going for abstract, you ever considered that?"

"Honestly, I just don't understand the vision, your audience is too niche Anais." He joked, turning his pumpkin around to face me. I almost spat out my hot chocolate when I saw the random collection of shapes carved into it.

"No fucking way you were talking smack about MINE, what is that?" I laughed at him. He laughed too, pointing to show me where the mouth and eyes were meant to be.

"Dude the fact that doesn't even clear it up, like, I'm so much more confused now." I laughed. "At least you can tell mine's meant to look vaguely how they look, you know?"

He leaned forwards and grabbed mine to look at it. "Anais where is the nose, you literally forgot the nose, and the fuck is going on in that part?" He asked.

"Give it back! You don't understand art!" I yelled, trying to grab it from him, but he moved his arms away so I couldn't grab it.

I laughed, then I reached towards his torso to tickle him to make him drop it, and as soon as I did he did drop it. "Jesus Anais you creep, why are you touching me?" Weston yelped, pushing my hands away suddenly.

"Um, what? uh, I don't..." My voice trailed off. I felt my face turn bright red. Oh god, I got too comfortable. What was I thinking? Did he think I was super weird?

"That was a ... joke. Obviously you can touch me." He said, quietly. He looked away when he said it.

"Why would that be obvious?" I asked in an accusatory tone, feeling flustered.

"Just- uh- nevermind." He said. He looked like he felt sick. I definitely felt sick. We shouldn't have kissed at that stupid party. Suddenly I noticed that everyone was looking right at us. No, right at me.

I got up, clearing my throat. "Guys, I have some college work to do now, so. I'm just gonna do it." I said, and everyone watched me as I walked away towards the building. As I stepped through the door I heard Weston call my name but I just kept going, feeling moritified.
