{ Arietta's POV }

"How is this even possible?" I ask

He just stares at me and asks "What exactly?"

"You being the one I...." I start to say it but I cut myself off and just simply shake my head.

He stands up and walks closer to me and asks "What is it that you were going to say?"

"I can't." I answer

He walks closer to me and this time I walk backwards until my back hit the wall made out of wood. He says "You're afraid." Almost as if he's figured me out. He couldn't be more wrong.

"I'm not afraid." I reply honestly

He walks even closer to me until we're almost touching. I let out a calming breathe, and close my eyes. Suddenly his hand is on my face. I don't know how his hand is able to be so strong and gentle but it is. He tilts my head up and says "Open your eyes."

I do as he asks only when I open them I'm staring right into his golden ones. I feel shocks go through my body from our eye contact. His eyebrows go up in surprise for a second, then he goes back to being unfazed. Then he asks the million dollar question..

"What are you?" He asks never moving

I know my eyes are glowing, and that's what he's referring too.

"That's a question you should probably ask to your friends..." I say referring to the elders or council

He nods gruffly and his whole body stiffens.

"Are they after you?" He questions

"Not them exactly but someone is."
I tell him because he deserves to know

After all he'll feel it if I do die.

"Why are you going to meet the council?" He asks

"To inform them of the situation, in case I can't get it handled they'll have too. My guardian insisted that I at least inform them. Although that'll be tricky considering I'm not supposed to let them know the person they've been trying to track is in fact me.. Nor should anyone else know that I exist." I tell him

"The council has been tracking you?" He questions

"Trying too." I reply

"For how long?" He questions again

"Since I was young." I answer

"Why?" He questions

"Because I'm something they know nothing about. A rarity, or at least that's what my mother called it."
I tell him honestly

"Have they hurt you?" He asks

"Not yet." I reply

"Have they tried?" He questions
closing his eyes for a second.

"Once." I answer

He immediately stiffens up..

"To be fair to them they didn't know that I was a child, I think they believed I was some kind of creature to take them and everyone else out. So they killed the one responsible instead." I tell him

"Who?" He asks with his eyes staring into mine

"My mother." I answer

"But they aren't after you now.." He says

"No. They can't track me unless I...." I started to tell him but I stopped

"You don't trust me." He says

"I'm trying too." I reply back then I take a breath "They can't track me unless I lose control."

He wants to asks more questions but he nods and leaves it alone for now. Then he asks "What is so wrong that'd you walk in and help those who killed your mother?"

I take a deep breath.

"They're back." I say quietly almost in a whisper

He mutters out a low growl.

"How?" He questions

"I don't know." I answer

"How do you know?" He asks

"Because this time they're after me." I finally admit

His eyes shoot up to meet mine, and I can tell he finally understands the situation we're in.

"I'm the one you were hoping they'd find to help.."
He says

I give a nod.

"Why?" He asks

"Because chances are I'll die. Either by the hunters, the council, or myself. My chances of living aren't fantastic, but if the council plays it smart everyone else could come out unharmed or at least alive."
I tell him honestly

His body stiffens and he growls "You want to be the bate." I put a hand on his arm and say "I don't want to be the bate, I don't want any of this..but I'll only be able to hold it in for so long. When that day comes rest assured unless the elders intervene..they'll all come for me. Including the council and every rouge that wants power. I just want to make sure that when the time comes that every creature doesn't get wiped out with me."

"You aren't the bate." He says strongly then he turns and walks away but before he's out of my sight he stops and says "They aren't going to lay a hand on you."

He knew they'd try.
He knew they'd all put up a fight.
And yet in this moment he made a vow almost just to himself that I'd be untouched.
