Slugstripe was going about his day as normal when Blackstar called him into his den. Slugstripe found this odd, because he'd never interacted with Blackstar much at all. He hadn't been there for his kithood and had refused to monitor his training or mentor him, so Slugstripe wasn't quite sure whether he liked him or not. He'd never really had the experience of having parents before; his mother had been killed by rogues when he was a kit, being watched by his mother's sister. His father hadn't spoken with him or his brother, Marigoldleg, although he'd at least watched one of his assessments. Although, in the moments where Slugstripe was least expecting it, every time he managed to get something right, there was Blackstar; watching with that guarded approval in his eyes.
Slugstripe flicked his ear as he followed Blackstar over to his den. Blackstar dipped his head as Slugstripe came inside. "As you know, you are my son, Blackstar. You, of you and your brother, I believe, are most like me."
Slugstripe flicked his ear, interested. "I suppose so.."
"It's about time that the Clans have a change, don't you think?" Blackstar asked. Slugstripe met his eyes. "W-Well...what kind of change?"
Blackstar's tail lashed. "Emberfoot often slips up on her duties. I'll warn her that if there is one more slip up.." Blackstar stared at Slugstripe meaningfully. "Well, then change will come to PineClan."
Slugstripe's eyes widened. "How?" He whispered.
"Wouldn't the Clans be better if it had my blood running through all of the leaders?" Blackstar's eyes narrowed. "My mother was once leader, but she died because Stormstar, another leader, failed at saving her. He became leader, and then, I got the position I truly deserved." He unsheathed his claws. "I will make sure that no such thing will happen to either of my sons."
Slugstripe shuffled awkwardly. "Blackstar?"
"Yes?" Blackstar turned to Slugstripe.
"Would it...would it be possible for me to become deputy?" Slugstripe asked.
"Oh, certainly." Blackstar grinned. "You have great potential."
Slugstripe nodded.
"Slugstripe?"
The black tom looked up. "Blackstar?"
Blackstar's copper eyes met Slugstripe's amber ones. "Call me 'Father'."
