"I say we hit them before they hit us!"

"They already have hit us, like five times." Maria deadpans as she sits at the table of the order meeting and Moody gives her an agitated look. "It's just the truth! Whatever we are planning, they're always five steps ahead."

"Then we have to be ready!" Mad-Eye retorts, slamming his hand down on the table. "This is the problem with you youngens! You're too relaxed." The younger members of the order all look at him incredulously. "We need to be aware—constant vigilance, I say!"

"Calm down, Alastor." Dumbledore holds up his hand and Moody's posture deflates slightly. "It seems that we're all forgetting how Mr Black and Miss Potter seem to be being targeted more than any of us." Regulus moves his hand to Maria's thigh, gripping it reassuringly.

"You both need to keep a low profile." McGonagall advises them, looking at them reassuringly. Minerva has always been there for Maria and the rest of their friends, and over the past few years she's been there for Regulus too. They honestly don't know how they will ever repay how supporting she's been throughout their years at and after Hogwarts. "Don't leave the house unless you must."

"What?" Maria furrows her eyebrows, looking between the people around the table. "We're just supposed to stop living our lives because of him?"

"It's only temporary, Maria." James sighs, fiddling with his wedding ring around his finger nervously.

Everybody in the Potter dining room is currently on edge — all the time. Three of their own have been murdered by the death-eaters over the last two weeks. When they thought things couldn't get any worse, they did. Every step they take outside of their protected homes is a risk, a risk to them, a risk to each other. . .but Maria also has antoher life to worry about now.

Each time she steps out of her gates, she's not only risking her own life, but her unborn child's too. Even though she is almost certain that Voldemort wouldn't kill her, she doesn't know what he would do to Regulus, and she's definitely not prepared to risk his life.

She can't live without him. Everything she does and will do until this is over is for him and her family. She is not letting their child grow up without a father, she won't.

Sometimes she wonders how they got here. How two students from feuding houses, on opposite sides of a war, sworn enemies since a messed up potion, could possibly end up where they are now. She wonders what her sixteen year old self would say if she saw her now, pregnant with Regulus Black's child, in love with Regulus Black.

She thinks about how far they've come, from being two stupid, recklessly in love teenagers to having a baby together and discussing war around a table of people they care about.
