Chapter 1: Forgotten Dreams of Tropical Hope
- Daily Life
POV - Nikei
After the announcement that the killing game has begun, we gathered in the hotel's lobby to discuss our next action.
Before the discussion could begin, we pulled out our E-Handbooks to check the updated list of rules and regulations. While the first several rules remained the same, the added rules had a much more...unsettling feeling to them.
It looks like Monocrow wasn't joking when he said that he was going to turn this school trip into a killing game. He added multiple new rules to the list of rules that reminded us on how the killing game works.
"Alright... spill it," Syobai demanded. "What the fuck is Grizzly Tales?"
We listened intently as Yoruko began describing the animated TV show to us.
The typical structure would be a brief glance at a main character's typical day in their life, followed by a change in their routine (e.g. a new possession came their way or a decision made by them/a supporting character) which eventually went wrong in a hoisted with their own petard way, with the story ending with the main character either being killed, mutilated, involuntarily shapeshifting, or kidnapped by something/someone supernatural.
"Oh, yeah!" I said. "In one episode, Message in a Bottle, this boy hated his father's job and he got squashed into a bottle!"Yoruko nodded. "Guys, don't reprimand your parents. Grizzly Tales got kinda bad in the last two seasons, though. They ruined the show."
"Is anyone else going to address the elephant in the room?" Hibiki asked.
"My talent?" Kanade asked.
"Yes." Hibiki said. "Why you can't remember it. Maybe you were the Ultimate Unlucky Student and you bumped your head very hard?"
"After all, good and bad luck are like salt and pepper!" Iroha chimed in.
"Or maybe Yuki removed your talent because it was a violent one..." Hibiki said.
"Violent?" Kanade asked.
"Maybe Kanade was the Ultimate Fence." Hibiki said.
"What's a fence?" I asked.
"A fence, also known as a receiver, mover, or moving man, is an individual who knowingly buys stolen goods in order to later resell them for profit. The fence acts as a middleman between thieves and the eventual buyers of stolen goods who may not be aware that the goods are stolen. Sometimes they kill people." Hibiki explained. "Maybe Yuki made Kanade forget about her position as the Ultimate Fence. After all, she probably erases people's memories."
"Thanks," Kanade said. "I don't think I fit any of those talents, though."
"Is that why none of us remember how we got here?" asked Syobai.
"God damn..." Mikado wheezed. "That's just messed up!"
"Seriously, though? That nice Yuki makes us lose our memories?" Emma quivered. "That sort of thing doesn't exist... right?"
"It can." Hibiki said. "Maybe she's the one responsible for all of us being stuck in the Killing Game."
Everyone froze in their tracks and turned to face Hibiki. My heart skipped a beat.
That nice Yuki.. she's the reason we're here...?
"...What." Mikado snarled icily.
"Uh... she's bad?" Kanade's voice trembled.
