Chapter 3: Trapped by the Ocean Scent

- Daily Life

All night I had been tossing and turning over what happened yesterday. No matter how hard I tried, there was just no plausible way of getting the gruesome image of the 'doll' that was the corpse of Emma or Yoruko getting crushed out of my head. Everything had happened so fucking fast and I barely even had a moment to give them a proper goodbye or even a funeral - after the trial was over, Emma's corpse was removed for clean-up and never returned.

When I woke up, the events of the day before came rushing back. Two more of us were dead. The recollection made me sick. I stood up, contemplating what to do.

I decided to head for the resturant for some breakfast.

"M-Mikado?" I snapped back to reality as a soft voice spoke beside me. I didn't remember when I sat down at the table next to Kokoro until she heard her voice.

"S-sorry..." I stuttered the apology to the cosplayer. "Were you talking to me?"

"N-no..." Kokoro shook her head and put her hand on my shoulder. "It's just that you... y-you look really sad. A-are you okay?"

"I'm fine." I forced a smile. "I'm just... I-I'm feeling really upset after yesterday's execution still."

"Oh, I-I understand." Kokoro sighed. "I can't believe someone like Yoruko c-could've done something so h-horrible. B-but, even if she did, s-she didn't deserve to go l-like that..."

"Nobody does." I stared down at the table. "Death is a horrible thing, but what makes this so different is Philomena's way of making it happen. Some people are fated to die by some means, and there's no denying that, b-but... but Monocrow makes the killers suffer! You can't help feeling bad for them... Hajime and Yoruko both died in the most horrible ways. I do miss Yuri and Emma, of course, but..."

"It's okay..." Kokoro patted my back when she heard the frustration seeping into my voice. "We-we're all going to get out soon. A-and we'll be safe and happy again... r-right?"

"Anyways, I should get something to eat!" I said.

I headed to the smoothie machine of the theme park.

Syobai and Iroha were the only other people there. Syobai turned on the blender as he made himself a smoothie, and when he was done, Iroha began talking to him. As I approached, it was clear that they had been talking for a while.

"I just don't get it." Iroha said. "It's like he can just... change sizes at will! I'm telling you whatever that thing is, it is not normal, and it's not a crow for that matter."

"So what is it then?" Syobai asked as he poured his drink into a glass and began washing out the blender. "Maybe he is actually... changing the size of the person he's executing?"

"But how?" Iroha scratched her head. "We don't see what happens when those people get dragged off..."

"That's exactly it then." Syobai took a few sips of his smoothie before he spoke again. "He does something in that dark hallway that we can't see before he broadcasts it."

"Huh, that makes sense..." Iroha muttered. "Oh, hey Mikado, I didn't see you there."

"Hey." I waved. "You guys were talking about Monocrow right?"
