Very glad about another opportunity to leave the house and even have some fun, I immediately texted back:

"I'm down, where and when?"

"Nice, I'll pick you up in an hour"

I texted back a simple thumbs up and got up to take a quick shower before leaving the house. Passing my sister's room on the way, I heard her tapping on her computer so I assume she's busy doing homework or something. Not gonna disturb her during that. So i quickly entered the bathroom, leaving 10 minutes later to go pick out a nice outfit for the party. Eventually, I decided on some black ripped jeans, a purple crop top and, since partying probably means a lot of dancing and mooving around, a pair of comfortable black sneakers. Putting on some jewelry to perfect the look, I still had half an hour before I was going to get picked up. Might as well also put on some makeup then.

After failing to get my eyeliner symmetrical for what felt like an eternity, I received another text.

"I'm here, come out"

Grabbing my purse I left my room to walk down the stairs, as a hand held me back by my elbow.

"Where are you going?" My sister asked with already a pissed expression on her face.

"I'm going out with friends."

"You have friends? Don't you just spend your whole day holed up in your room crying about not managing your life?"

"No, I cry about possibly not managing my future." I ripped my arm from her grip. "And I DO have friends."

She scoffed. "The old guy is back again."

"I saw him."

"So? You're just accepting it? Not doing anything about it?"

"What do you want me to do? Throw him out? It's not my house. And our parents are still married. Mom has to manage that."

"Are you stupid? Why are you never on my side? You like him being here and spending her money?"

"I don't know what you're talking about, just let me go. You're just always twisting my words anyway." Tired of this already completely useless argument, I turned around to keep walking just to have her snatch my elbow again.

"You can't just run away when you don't want to talk!"

Ripping my arm away from her grip once more, I kept walking faster down the stairs and almost sprinting outside to meet my friend, sending a text to my mom on the way to inform her where I'm going to.

The party is in full swing, there are people drinking and dancing all over the place. Already a bit exhausted after being here for hours, I went outside, sitting down on the porch and looking at the stars for a while. My friend, Alex, joined me shortly after.

"What are you up to?" He asked, apparently also looking for a little break between all the dancing and plopping down on the ground right next to me.

"I just need a bit of fresh air. All of these people in there moving around, the whole house is all stuffy and disgusting."

"I feel that" We both chuckled. Alex started staring off into the distance towards the forest. It looked almost eerie in this darkness. You could barely even make out the branches of the trees in the front. "Are you never scared of being alone in there? In the forest, I mean."

"Aw, come on, as if anything from that forest could scare me at this point. It's practically my second home now."

"I know, but, like, still. You never know you could be in there with you. Hiding behind some trees. Lurking around. Waiting to murder you or something." He said in a jokingly creepy undertone, taking his hands up and wiggling his fingers around as he pretended to reach for me.

"Ew, get away from me!" I jumped up laughing, swatting his hands away as I took a step back. "But for real, I'm not scared in there. I feel like it's kinda my safe space. I'm just away from everything." Plopping back down on the floor next to him, I stared up towards the stars again. "I just don't worry about whether or not my father is home or what he's doing. I don't worry about my sister being in a bad mood, ready to pick another fight with me for no reason in particular. I don't worry about how much my mom is working to support not only our basic needs but also all the weird antics my father starts every now and then. And I don't have to listen to anyone argueing. It's just so quiet and peaceful for once."

"You know, if home gets too stressful, you can always just call me and come over, right?"

"Yeah I know. Thanks."

"Hey, no worries. Anyway, I'll go back inside, I think I hear the hardstyle phase of the party starting. You comin' too?"

"Hmm, I think I'll go home. I'm kinda tired. And I'd love a little late night walk through town right now."

"Oh okay, sure. Be careful walking alone though. If anything happens, call me. Or if I should pick you up somewhere and drive you home."

I smiled at him and gave him a short hug before saying good bye and making my back home.

Even though Alex drove me here, the party wasn't actually too far away from my house. Maybe just a 30-minute walk. And after a party, I always thought a little walk was actually very calming and I always found myself just sleeping way better after it.
I live in a rather small, sub-urban town, so there usually aren't a lot of people outside late at night. Sometimes it bothers me how quiet it is here, but right now on my little late night walk it's actually quite comfortable. During these 30 minutes of walking I thought about the party again. There aren't many parties around here so I'm always happy to get out and spend time with other people. Especially now that I'm so close to finishing school. I don't know how stressful life will become after that. Maybe I won't even have any time to go out and have fun or simply just meet some friends. Honestly, it's scary thinking about it all. But I guess everyone kinda goes through this.

Arriving home, I saw both of my parents cars in the driveway. Well, my mom is always home in the evening, would be strange for her to still be away at 2 am. I stared at the front door for a second. The lock is still kinda broken so wiggling my keys around there for 2 minutes might wake my father up, who is most likely sleeping downstairs in the living room. So i went around the house towards the back door. We keep a key for that in a cabinet by the door. I opened one of the drawers and took the key. The lock on this door works fine so I had no trouble opening it. Since now everyone is home, I took the key inside and locked the door from the inside.

I took my shoes off and placed them by the door before quietly walking through the kitchen along the hallway, stopping momentarily by the living room. It was completely dark in the house but i could make out the silhouette of my father on the couch. Usually he's snoring a bit but today he was sleeping very quietly. Well, that just makes him less annoying. Whatever.

I kept walking towards the stairs, trying to just get into my room as quickly and quietly as possible and just go straight into bed. My room is right at the top of the stairs so luckily I don't have to pass by any other bedrooms. As I was about to enter my room I noticed something weird. My mom's bedroom is the second room in the hallway and my sister's bedroom is at the end of the hallway. Usually, my sister keeps her room door closed at all times, especially while she sleeps. But tonight it was slightly open. As I was taking a step towards her room I started noticing weird noises coming from her room. I passed my mom's room, taking a quick glance inside. It was still completely dark. I could barely make out her silhouette. But I noticed a very weird smell coming from her room. For a second, I thought I heard something dripping but it could've been just my imagination.

Not wanting to potentially wake up my mom and also still too curious about whatever is up with my sister, I kept walking as quietly as I could towards her room. I couldn't figure out what noises I was hearing. I walked up to her door and peeked inside her room. I saw movement in the darkness. I saw not one silhouette, but two. And it wasn't my sister who's moving around there. It was someone else. Someone was right there, hovering above my sister. Who is that? What is he doing? Why is she not moving? It took me a while to make out what's happening before my eyes.

But when I did, the realization hit me like a brick and completely took my breath away.
