mary isn't exactly looking forward to fourth grade, and you don't blame her

you love shopping for school supplies and new outfits with her, but it makes your heart ache that you won't see her as much anymore

as the day approaches, she gets extra whiny with frank, asking to go out on his new boat almost every night

and it wouldn't usually work on him

but you're right alongside her, giving frank your cutest pouty face, offering to do the dishes or give his hands a massage or anything because you love being out on the water with him

the horrendous florida humidity has dissipated a bit, and you can taste the salt in the air as you admire frank and his strong, tan arms steering you aimlessly across the water's surface

you always strap mary into her life vest as frank helps you into yours

mary likes to hang her arm over the edge, teasing frank about getting eaten by an alligator while you two sit on reclined chairs on the other end of the boat, holding hands, trying to identify constellations as you share a beer or two

it's the most natural thing in the world, during those moments, to tell frank you love him

to punctuate it with a soft kiss

and not just once—several times throughout the night, because those three words surge in your heart over and over when you look at him

he whispers it back, every time.
