"smile like what?"

sam chuckles.

you puff your cheeks up with air, an attempt to relax those muscles in your face that betrayed you tonight.

he smirks, playfully drumming the steering wheel with his palms. "thought you didn't want kids."

"oh my god, sam." painfully aware of how childish it looks, you cross your arms and roll your eyes. "you know i can't act rationally around those tiny baby fingers."

it didn't help, either, that you didn't know anybody at sarah's friend's party. charming strangers was sam's department, and he knew that. so it should be expected—an entire afternoon spent cooing at the sweet baby boy who tugged at your skirt, laughed at all your jokes, and never tried to make small talk.

you could feel sam looking at you the whole time, while you bounced that cute little butt in your lap and he fended off dozens of captain america-related questions.

"it's not a hard no," he remarks quietly.

"it's never been a hard no." you squirm in the passenger seat, remembering the way sam stole the baby from you for just a few minutes. my turn, he had said, tickling his belly and winking in your direction. the little boy looked so small next to sam. "especially when it comes to you."

you'd give him anything. everything, if you could. but this feels huge.

luckily, your response seems sufficient. so you watch the world roll by, sam's calm driving almost lulling you to sleep.

then, he interjects: "sarah's got a lot of clothes she can hand down to us."

"sam." you halfheartedly smack his shoulder, sighing. "it doesn't scare you?"

"oh, it's terrifying."

at this confession, your hand runs along his arm, his hand pulled into your lap. you study the lines across his palms.

"even with cass and aj, jesus, i was out of my mind worrying." he winces. "i still worry."

"and you still think it's worth it, even with all that?" you chew on your lip.

"yes." his hand turns and spreads, warm and big over your thigh. "especially when it comes to you."
