DARKNESS
"everything is better with you. everything has been better since you"~lyla~
walking into my apartment, i immediately spot Meredith and Harper at the kitchen island discussing something which i can't quite hear. once they hear the door creak, they both go quiet and just stare at me.
i can feel my heart speed up at their reaction and the face they are currently giving me.
i gently set my bags down on the kitchen floor and slowly trudge over towards them. i raise my eyebrows as their eyes dart between one another and myself.
i carefully remove my coat and place it on the counter, waiting for the girls in front of me to begin. i nod, hoping they will say whatever they think is so important they needed me home immediately for, but neither of them speak.
"guys?" i ask skeptically. "what's wrong?"
they both immediately avert their gaze towards the ground, almost like they are embarrassed to tell me whatever they are hiding. "guys!"
"i saw miles yesterday!" harper blurts, immediately covering her mouth with her hand and getting a slap in the arm by Meredith.
my lips form into a line and i hang my head between my arms gripping the edge of the counter. "yeah, my mom told me he was back."
"we weren't sure how to tell you but-"
"where did you guys see him?"
harper sighs, and i can feel her eyes all over me. i refuse to look up. i refuse to let them know that my father has this effect on me. how could i care this much?
why do i care so much about him and if he's back or not? he wants nothing to do with me, he made that very clear 9 years ago, so why should i want anything to do with him?
i scoop my bags up from the ground and make a bee-line towards my room, not caring enough about that answer. harper grabs my wrist and gives me a comforting smile, before both girls pull me into a hug.
i wrap my arms around them silently and stick my face into harpers neck, feeling my eyes start to swell with tears. i pull away, before quickly shaking it off and heading off to my room.
i check my phone, noticing i have many notifications, but i honestly couldn't care less about them at this moment. i scoop up my hockey bag, and walk past the two girls in the kitchen towards the door without saying a word.
i can feel their eyes on me once again, but neither of them dare to speak. i slam the door behind me and throw my bag into the trunk of my car.
after arriving at the rink, i drive slowly to the back, being careful not to hit anyone arriving. today was a big game for the team. if we won we could easily make it to nationals, which is a dream for anyone who plays hockey. or any sport for that matter.
i hadn't bothered telling meredith or harper, knowing neither of them liked the sport, but they both would feel obligated to come for all that best friend, sappy shit. i didn't want to make them come to something they probably couldn't give a shit about.
i hadn't bothered telling my mother either, knowing she wouldn't have shown up anyways. she only cared about my brothers achievements, and hasn't come to a single game since my sixth grade year.
