It was midnight, the moon was high in the sky and the stars twinkled. All creatures big and small were sound asleep.
All except for Giyuu.
His stomach seemed to be clawing at him from the inside, grumbling angrily at him to eat something, anything.
He fought it off for as long as he could, he knew what would happen if he ate something. He could still picture the blood of his precious older sister staning his hands, the crimson red stains never seemed to was away even if he rubbed his pale skin raw.
He gulped, picturing his new and only friend's body beneath him, his hands stained with a second coat of blood.
His stomach growled at the thought while he sobbed and choked on his tears. He cried and cried silently, then climbed out of his tree and down to the nearby river to cry some more.
He must've cried more than he'd ever cried in his entire life before this, because now his face stung and his eyes were puffy and red and his nose was blocked and stuffy.
He curled his legs into his chest, clasping his clawed hands around them and rocking in place ever so slightly.
When a though crossed his mind as a shadow whipped past him through the river.
Fish.
And not just any fish, Giyuu recognized it from the river near his home. That was a salmon, his favourite food.
Slowly and carefully he crept into the river, relishing in the cool water that circled around his feet and ankles.
He crouched down, leaning agasint the riverbank, his arms positioned just above the water which bubbled in response to the quiet, distant whisper of a waterfall.
When one fish ventured too close, he grabbed it, encasing the struggling creature in his clawed hands and throwing it onto the grass were it flopped in a panic.
He crouched down again, and waited and waited and waited. He waited for a while until another fish ventured too close, and he grabbed it.
He repeated the process a few times then climbed out of the cold water and sat down where his small pile of plump salmon lay still.
It was quite possibly the best meal Giyuu had ever had, but he wasn't quite too sure how to feel about that. The was raw, and probably dirty, yet it tasted heavenly. Perhaps it was because he hadn't eaten in the six months it had been since his sister's death.
He sat in the dusty grass for a while after eating, listening to crickets chirping their melodies to one another. The night progressed and soon there was a faint glow on the horizon, yet he wasn't tired.
And back in his tree, he still wasn't tired. For some reason, in this monstrous from… He wasn't tired. And he hated it, in fact he loathed it. He couldn't sleep to forget everything, not even for an hour. He just had to sit awake, and endure it.
It wasn't fair.

By the time the sun had risen and was barely peaking over the tips of the distant mountain range, Giyuu had hidden himself in the thick branches of his tree. He listened as the birds began to aweken, singing their morning choruses.
Curling up against the trunk of the tree to avoid any stray beams of sunlight, the little demon listened intently for the sounds of his approaching friend while repeating some words he'd been practicing over and over in his head.
He could hear the strange noise the cows made long before he could see them. They walked slowly at a lazy, leisurely pace with making noises at eachother.
He watched intently, waiting to see the peachy coloured, spiky hair of his new and only friend. He could hear his voice before he saw him.
He watched as Sabito walked closer and closer, talking to the cows as he walked.
"Sabito!" He yelled from the tree, poking his head out from the branches and wincing as he was hit by the sun. He pulled his head back in, tears pricking the corners of his eyes as his skin sizzled and burned before eventually healing.
"Giyuu?" The pink haired boy called from the base of the tree, staring up into the branches with a wide smile.
Just like last time, Giyuu pulled Sabito into the tree in a swift movement. The little demon grinned at his friend.
Both boys had wide smiles, Giyuu's little fangs glinting in the sunlight.
"Have you been practicing any words?"
The raven haired nodded then spoke, "Y-Yes!"
"Awesome! How's about I teach you some more words?"
Giyuu nodded, letting out a little rumble.
