Chapter 18: The Decision

Luther POV

I was keenly aware that my recent actions could easily be seen as betrayal from the king's perspective, potentially leading to severe consequences like facing judgment before the council or even being executed at the king's discretion. Despite the gravity of the situation, I maintained a facade of composure, pretending that everything was normal.

Meeting with important royal members to discuss the unusual activities outside the palace, I was careful with my words, denying any knowledge or sightings of what they were referring to. I suspected that someone might have informed them or intercepted certain correspondence, heightening my caution.

As the royal members began to disperse, I turned to Torres, seeking to gather more information. "Where is everyone?" I asked him.

"Well, the king is busy with some meeting away from the palace. I have no idea where Tristan is at, but he mentioned there was something he needs to do. The guards are out in the city and that leaves you and me." he says. At least the king isn't here.

"Keep this between me and you, I'm going down the chambers," I told him and he nods. I head down to the chambers which were usually protected by the guards, but no one was here. "Aries?" I called out. When I didn't hear anything, I went further down to investigate. Nobody was here. I went back upstairs and ran towards Torres.

"Where's Aries?"

Torres glanced at me, his expression tense with concern. "The chambers, idiot. Didn't you just go down there?" His words carried a sharp edge, but I brushed off his hostility, my focus solely on finding Aries.

"Well, Torres, I wouldn't be asking if he was. Aries isn't there," I replied tersely, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. Torres's face paled slightly at my words, worry creasing his brow.

"Do you think the king had... you know?" Torres's voice dropped to a whisper, hinting at the unspoken fear of royal retribution. I shook my head slowly. "I doubt it. But... did you hear that?" I interrupted, my ears perking at the faint sounds coming from outside.

Torres tilted his head, listening intently. "It's probably just your imagination," he said dismissively, though I could sense his own unease. The second noise, slightly louder but still distant, caught our attention again.

"Maybe you're right," I conceded reluctantly, pushing aside the unsettling feeling gnawing at me. "We have tasks to attend to, a list of things," he says.

"Why can't you do it yourself ?" I frowned at him. Torres lets out a frustrated growl.

"Are you that lazy?"

"Pretty much." I shrugged, as I was walking with him. He starts to complain and threatening me, blah, blah and all that nonsense. I just ignored him. My ears picked up someone voice that sounded like a female.

"Did you say there were guards outside." I asked cutting off his rant.

"I said they were out not outside. Do you even listen?"

"Someone is out there. So continue and be grumpy while I'll go outside." I said, leaving him there frustrated. So I made my way outside hearing another loud noise. My instinct told me to run to it. So I did. I looked around and around not seeing anything, but I smell something. Blood. Sweet smelling blood. I followed the scent which led me in the middle of somewhere where there were three bodies laying still.

As I scanned the scene, dread and disbelief washed over me like a cold wave crashing against the shore. Sherry lay motionless with a bullet wound in her chest, her normally lively presence now unnervingly still. Nearby, Rene and Janice, also drenched in blood, lay unconscious or worse. Panic clawed at my chest as I knelt beside them, my mind racing with fear and desperation.
