Carol Of The Bells

Kind of like that one church scene in Home Alone with Kevin and his neighbour, that sorta thing

Y/n's P.O.V/Narrator's P.O.V

It hasn't been great for the nine year old Y/n this time of month: December. The young boy had been left home alone by accident when his family went on a trip to France. And Y/n was left behind by accident since the family was in such a rush to get to the vans before they left to go to the airport. Y/n was so deep in thought that he didn't notice the singing of Christmas carols inside the church that he was walking past until he almost slipped. Y/n slowly looked up to the church, his eyes widening with curiosity. He adjusted the mittens on his hands and started walking up to the church.

Once inside, the singing sounded way better than its muffled sounds from when Y/n was outside in the freezing cold. As Y/n was walking down the aisle past the wooden benches people could sit in, Y/n glanced at the Jesus statues and the glass stained windows that depicted Jesus or Mary. Y/n finally sat down and took off his blue and white mittens, placing them gently on his lap and staring at all the singers up at the front of the church. All of them focused on the conductor who was helping them remember their lines by mouthing them to the carolers. Y/n took off his toque (those beanies that people wear in the winter) and adjusted his red scarf.

But he felt like something was wrong.

Y/n turned to his right and his jaw dropped. It was his neighbour! Hedwig Bishop was his name. The young male noticed Y/n staring at him and glanced around before slowly standing up. Y/n only stared in fear as Hedwig came closer before he finally stopped in front of Y/n. His black trench coat really fit his mysterious personality. Hedwig gave Y/n a curt nod and a small smile. "Merry Christmas." He muttered. Y/n gave his neighbour a strange look, not sure how to react to the man standing before him who has always looked intimidating and the angry look on his face always scared people. "May I sit down?" Hedwig suddenly asked, gesturing to the empty spot beside Y/n. Hedwig patiently waited until Y/n nodded their head, moving a bit to let Hedwig sit down. Once Hedwig sat down and got comfortable, he quietly cleared his throat.

"That's my niece up there." Hedwig said, gesturing to one of the girls carolling up at the front of the church. "The little ginger haired girl. She has her mother's hair." Hedwig continued, watching as Hedwig's niece gave Hedwig a glance before looking back at the conductor to focus on singing Holy Night. "She's about your age. Have you met her?" Hedwig asked Y/n, turning to glance at him. Y/n shook their head. "You live next to me, don't you?" Y/n only nodded again but this time ever so slowly. Hedwig softly smiled at Y/n, straightening his back. "You can say 'hello' when you see me. You don't have to be afraid. There's a lot of things going around about me, but none of it is true. Okay?" Y/n nodded again, Hedwig giving him another smile. "Have you been good this year?" Y/n turned to look at the floor.

"I think so." Y/n muttered, looking back at Hedwig. "Swear to me?" Hedwig whispered. "No." Y/n shamefully answered, catching Hedwig by surprise. "Oh." Was all he could muster. "I had a feeling. Well, this is the place to be if you're feeling bad about yourself." Y/n gave Hedwig a weird look.

"It is?"
"I think so."
"Are you feeling bad about yourself?"
"No."

Hedwig lied, but it was quite obvious that he wasn't telling the truth. Y/n knew it too, but decided not to push onto the topic. After all, he was still scared of Hedwig being around him. "I've been kind of a pain lately. I said some things I shouldn't have. I really haven't been too good this year." Y/n painfully admitted to Hedwig, whose expression changed from curious to sympathetic. "Yeah." Hedwig muttered in an understanding way. "I've been kind of upset about it because I really like my family. Even though sometimes I say I don't, sometimes I'll even think I don't, do you get that?" Hedwig looked to the side for a moment, comprehending what Y/n had just said. "I think so. How you feel about your family is a complicated thing." Y/n nodded. "Especially with an older brother/sister." Y/n said with wide eyes. "But deep down you'll always love them. You might forget that you love them, and you can hurt them like they can hurt you. And that's not just because you're young." Hedwig paused for a moment.

"Do you wanna know the real reason why I'm here right now?" He asked with a wary tone. "Sure." Y/n perked up at the sound of Hedwig's question. "I came here to hear my niece sing. And I only come here at night." Y/n raised a brow. "Is it because you have plans?" He asked Hedwig who shook his head. "No. I'm not welcome." Hedwig admitted. "At church?!" Y/n said not loud enough for everyone to hear, but loud enough to let Hedwig know that Y/n was shocked. "Oh you're always welcome at church. I'm not welcome with my younger brother." A sad frown fell upon Hedwig's face. Y/n only stared at Hedwig, unsure of what to do. "Years back, before you and your family moved on the block, I had an argument with my younger brother." Y/n tilted his head to the side just a bit. "How old is he?" Hedwig seemed to be in deep thought for a moment then answered. "He's grown up. He'd be 17 years old right now." Hedwig then continued after a short moment. "We lost our tempers. And I said I wouldn't care to see him anymore since I had just found out that he adopted a little girl, my niece, from her biological mother as she was very ill. He also said he wouldn't care to see me anymore. We haven't spoken to each other since."

Y/n felt quite guilty for Hedwig. Yes, he looked very angry all the time, but could that just be because he misses his younger brother? "Since you miss him, why don't you call him?" Y/n said with a matter-of-fact tone. "I'm afraid that if I call him he won't talk to me." Hedwig adjusted the dark grey scarf around his neck. "How do you know?" Y/n pushed on, trying to find a way to help Hedwig. "I don't know.. I'm just afraid he won't." Hedwig stared up at one of the gold chandeliers at the top of the ceiling, seeming to be thinking about the incident. "No offense, but aren't you a little too old to be afraid?" Hedwig snorted, making eye contact with Y/n. "Lad, I'm 20 years old. And I don't even look that old. I at least look like I'm 23." Hedwig chuckled with a heartwarming smile, gently patting Y/n's shoulder.

"But you're never too old to be afraid."
"That's true. I'm afraid of my basement. It's dark, there's weird stuff down there. And it smells funny. That sort of thing. It's bothered me for years..."

Hedwig turned to Y/n with an understanding look on his face. Was he afraid of basements when he was a kid too? "Basements are like that." Y/n scoffed. "Then I made myself go down there to do some laundry. And I found out it's not so bad. All this time I've been worrying about it, but if you turn on the lights, it's no big deal!" Hedwig gave Y/n a confused side eye. "What's your point?" Y/n rolled his eyes, giving Hedwig a look that said 'seriously?'.

"My point is you should call your brother." Hedwig gave Y/n a worried look. "What if he won't talk to me?!" Y/n shook his head softly, giving Hedwig a comforting smile. "At least you'll know. Then you can stop worrying about it. And you won't be afraid anymore. I don't care how mad I was when I talked to my dad. Especially around the holidays." Hedwig took a deep but shaky sigh. "I don't know..." Y/n turned back to the carolers once they started to sing Carol of the Bells, thinking the tune of their voices was relaxing. "Just give it a shot. For your niece anyway, I'm sure she misses you. And the presents." Hedwig started to tap his left foot to the carolling. "I sent her some money." Y/n went wide eyed in surprise. "Wish my grandparents did that! They always send me clothes. Last year I got a sweater with a big bird knitted on it!" Hedwig smiled. "That's nice." Y/n shook their head, swinging his feet back and forth.

"Not for a guy in the 2nd grade. You can beat up for wearing something like that!" Hedwig looked shocked, his eyebrows rising. "Oh God.." Y/n turned back to Hedwig. "Yeah, I have a friend who got nailed 'cause there was a rule that you couldn't wear dinosaur pj's." Hedwig took a fancy gold pocket watch out of his black trench coat, squinting at the Roman numerals before clearing his throat. "You better run along home where you belong. And you think about what I said, yes?" Y/n nodded with an 'okay' before standing up. "It was nice talking to you." Hedwig smiled, shaking hands with Y/n and letting him out of the wooden benches. Y/n said the same as he put his mittens and toque back on, glancing at Hedwig as he stayed seated. "What about you?" Hedwig glanced at Y/n. "Me?" He pointed at his own chest. "Yeah! You and your brother." Hedwig's mouth fell into an 'o' shape. "We'll see what happens." Hedwig's small frown turned into a soft smile. "Merry Christmas." Y/n smiled back. "Merry Christmas." He uttered, starting to walk down the aisle.

Then the chime of the church bell rang, causing Y/n to sprint out of the church, a worried look on his face.

Hedwig looked down at his hands, noticing one of the gold rings on his pointer finger turning to the colour silver and his skin turning back to gold.

I tried my best on this one, my friend!
