The rest of my classes went by pretty quick that day, and it was almost time for the quidditch tryout. I was still stuck deciding whether or not it was something I wanted to participate in. I know Imelda would be happy to have me, but I did need to be focusing on academics this year.

"I think it will be a good distraction for you," Poppy told me. "You enjoy flying enough, and you're very good at it." We were sitting in the transfiguration courtyard under the tree. She was laying on her back, eyeing some birds in the branches above us. I was almost entirely spaced off.

"I guess it couldn't hurt to go," I said. "I don't have to join the team just because I went to tryouts. That might upset Imelda, though."

Poppy chuckled lightly. "Imelda is just very intense, you can't base what you do off of how she might react."

"That's true," I replied. "I guess I'll go today. Can't hurt." Poppy smiled at me.

"Well I'll be in the stands to support you! I bet Natty will come too."

"Thank you, Poppy," I smiled.

I headed back to the common room to change into something more comfortable for the tryouts. I slipped on a pair of trousers and a plain shirt, pulling my knit Slytherin sweater over the top.

I headed out to the field with my broom, where I saw that some Slytherins were already out on the field practicing, including Imelda and Sebastian. I saw Ominis in the stands next to Poppy and Natty.

"Y/n!" Imelda shouted. She flew down towards me quickly, dismounting her broom with ease. "You made it! I'm so glad you got your head out of the gutter and showed up."

"Yeah," I said. "Let's just hope I'm as good as everyone thinks I'll be."

"I know you won't let me down, I've seen you fly. I won't go as far as to say you're better than me, but you're pretty damn good."

did beat all of her records last year.

"Well we'll see, won't we?" I smiled.

I got on my broom and joined the others. After a little while of warming up, Imelda gathered us together.

"Thank you to everyone who showed up today, I think we have a lot of good prospects for a team this year," she started. "A lot of our team graduated out last year, so there's a lot of openings to fill. Don't think for one second that if you were on the team last year that you've got a foot in this year as well. Everyone is on level footing today, so try your absolute best and show me what you got!"

With that, the tryouts began. I tried not to get distracted when Sebastian whisked past me in the sky. He looked good on his broom, and he was a good flier. He was wanting to be a chaser. I wasn't sure what position I'd be assigned, and I wasn't partial to any of them.

She had me in the goalie position for a little bit while we all skirmished, and Sebastian scored on me several times. He was really good and would definitely make the team. There were a few younger kids who struggled to keep up- you could tell right off the bat that there were a few who wouldn't make the cut at all.

After the tryouts, Imelda gathered up together one last time. "Thank you everyone for coming, I'll be posting a list in the common room as soon as possible after some deliberations. I do want a few of you to stay back though, to do some more thorough practice to see about who would make the best seeker."

She listed off a few people, me included.

I stayed behind as most everybody, including Sebastian, left the field. There were four of us left.

"First, I want to do some speed trials, just to accurately gauge your flying," she told us.

She had us all race at the same time across the trial that I'd first beaten Imelda at in our fifth year. I'd done this one many times and was often shaving seconds off of my record, so it was easy for me to come out on top in the end.

"Just as I expected, y/n," Imelda told me as I passed through the finish. "Still one of the fastest fliers I know."

After everyone was back, she cut the two who came in third and fourth, which left me and one other student.

It was a boy I'd never met before, probably in the same year as me or one below. He was fast, but I knew I was faster. I could beat him.

"I'm going to release the snitch," Imelda told us. "I want you to wait about ten seconds, then the first person to catch it and find it, will be our seeker."

She released the tiny golden snitch into the air, and I tried to keep track of it for a few seconds but lost it. Then, Imelda shouted 'GO!'

We were off, both flying high, to try to spot it. I kept my distance from the other person, just focusing on the task at hand.

"Nervous there, y/n?" the boy said, flying up next to me. It threw me off that he knew my name, but I guess it makes sense, seeing what I did in my fifth year. A lot of people knew of me. I knew my focus, though, scanning for the snitch.

"Oh, not gonna talk to me? Why not? Are you scared of me?" he egged further. I just turned my broom around and slowly went off in the other direction. He still followed me, almost more focused on intimidating me than the actual task at hand.

I scanned the field and around the stands, trying to figure out where that little bastard got off to. Then I see it. About five feet above Natty's head in the stands- a little golden dot, shimmering in the afternoon sun. I flew straight for it, as fast as I could. As soon as I reached the stands it did a full 180, and I stopped and turned as well. I watched underneath me as Natty, Ominis, and Poppy fell onto their backs, trying to avoid me. I'd apologize later.

The other boy trying out caught sight of what I was doing and was right on my tail. He caught up to me, flying beside me, repeatedly trying to bump me.

If he's gonna play dirty, so am I. I began to speed up, but right before I blasted past him, I hooked his foot with mine and kicked back as hard as I could, effectively knocking his balance. I didn't stay long enough to see if he'd actually fallen, but I didn't care in that moment. I was so close to the snitch.

I weaved and bobbed through the air with it, finally feeling it between my fingers after a few attempts to grasp it. I stopped and looked back- the poor boy was hanging onto his broom with one hand, still struggling to get back on.

I brought the snitch back to Imelda, who congratulated me and informed me on the spot that I'd have a position on the team as seeker if I wanted it.

After the tryouts and beating that other kid's arse just now, I had a little taste of what quidditch would be like, and told her I'd do it.
