You have been mated to the kings for a while and even though you didn't know much about mates but you felt as though they should have been a little more romantic. They spent time with you and you guys talked and got along, but it wasn't the same as other relationships you've had. You knew something was missing, Aro and Caius seemed detached in a way. Marcus seemed to be the person you went to for everything as he seemed to care, but as you felt further and further from Aro and Caius you started to wonder if Marcus was in on it and it was only a matter of time before he left too, fully shattering you. You knew that they felt something for you as they tend to worry about you and want to make sure you are safe but beyond that it's different. Marcus seemed to actually want to spend time with you and touch you and build something. You thought maybe he just had nothing better to do and spending time with you was the last thing to cure his boredom. As time went on you felt so conflicted, Marcus seemed very genuine in the relationship with you, being very caring and honest. Aro and Caius were only around when it was convenient and beneficial for them like they had so many other things to be doing at that moment. They often would be pulled away from some important business and you just didn't get it, what could they possibly need to do that for some reason Marcus didn't?
You were currently sitting on the couch in your room with Marcus, he had you sitting in between his legs as he read to you in Italian. You would repeat a word or two or ask Marcus what they meant, he was happy to oblige and help you learn. This seemed so loving and you were afraid to lose it, waiting for the moment Marcus receded away from you like the others did.
"Marcus, can I ask you something?"
"Of course, tesaro."
"Why do you stick around me?"
"What on earth are you talking about?"
"Aro and Caius don't seem to care so why do you?"
Marcus put his book down and turned you around to look at him, "Tesaro, I will not ever leave you. I told you that you were my second chance. I need you as much as you need me. As for my brothers, they are just very busy, they tend to run things around here. I would rather be with you than doing anything else."
You looked down, you couldn't look into his eyes, "Why don't they want to be around all the time?"
Marcus knew that they still had their wives and both parties were kept in the dark, "They have a lot of responsibilities to keep the vampire world a secret. I spend time with you so they can keep things together." He felt bad lying to you, but Caius and Aro told him to never mention the wives to you and to never mention you to the wives. He needed you to believe that they were just busy all the time and when you did see them, they put off a lot to visit.
"I know it just sucks. I feel like they should be here as much as you if they truly were my mates."
Marcus pulled you into his chest, giving you a hug which at this point you really needed. You knew what Marcus was saying made sense, it just didn't add up, they were supposed to be unable to live without you. Marcus rested his head on the crown of yours and just hugged you, he hoped that one day he could tell you the truth and you'd understand.
Eventually, it was time for you to go to bed, at this point, it had been four days since you last saw Aro and Caius. You fell asleep after Marcus tucked you in and he left, normally he liked to stay but he wanted to go talk to his brothers. He sped down the hall to Aro's study, he opened the door and there he was luckily alone.
"Ahh Marcus, how is our mate?"
"She is okay, asleep now. However, she is starting to question why you and Caius do not come around."
"That is a problem and what did you tell her?"
"I told her that the both of you were busy with your kingly duties."
