The gun was heavy. It felt out of place in my hands, like I shouldn't be touching such a deadly object. I came out of the car and showed Olivia my find.
"Wow. That'll come in handy. How many bullets are in it?"
"Uh, good question." I fumble around with it, trying to find a way to the magazine.
"Careful with that thing! Your gonna shoot your brains out! Give it here." I place the gun into her hands and in no time the magazine slides open and into her palm.
"Five bullets." She says and pops the magazine back in. I forgot Olivia's dad was a cop.
"Yeah, maybe you should be the one to hold onto it." I say. Olivia puts the gun on to her waist and we begin to walk once again.
***
We've only been walking for about ten minutes and the suns already begun to set.
"I can't believe it. Costco's only minutes away. Oh God, please don't be infested. We went through a lot to get here. Please, don't screw it up, God." Olivia says, her hands together as if she's praying.
She's right. We've gone through so much in just the past few days to get here. The loss of Mr. Ryan, fighting countless walkers, almost dying in a closet, being split from our group. Please, I beg, don't screw this up.
We turn onto the main road and I can see the sign. Its there. Its right there! Olivia and I exchange a tired yet relieve look. "Finally!" She says, trying to hold back her excitement.
I look at the building as it gets closer with every step. That building can contain either hope that sparks, or hope that turns to ash
I hope our friends are in there somewhere. I hope we will be reunited. I hope this will be a safe place in a dangerous world.
We've reached the parking lot. There's two-by-fours and metal beams on the ground, but There's no sign of this place being infested with walkers. The thought builds my hope even more and I begin to walk faster.
"This is it, olivia. We've made it!" I say with way to much excitement, but I don't care. Finally.
Suddenly, olivia slows down. "Lukas," she begins, her voice shaky. "We.. We didn't think of something."
"And what's that?" I say, feeling myself snap back to reality with the thought of a new danger. The excitement inside me quickly dwindles away.
"We thought this place could be infested with walkers. But we never thought of something else. What if this place isn't infested by walkers, but instead by-"
She's cut short by a loud voice.
"Take one more step and I'll blow yer buggin' heads clean off yer shoulders!"
