Chapter 13
PAST
Crash!
The coffee mug shattered against the floor, fragments scattering in every direction. Jae-soo stood, his chest heaving with anger, glaring at his cowering mother in the corner. He couldn't believe she had hidden his heritage from him all this time out of selfishness.
"How could you do this to me?" Jae-soo snapped, his eyes blazing with fury. Tears streamed down his mother's face, but she remained silent, her heart breaking at the sight of her son's rage. It was her fault, he thought bitterly, that he had been deprived of what rightfully belonged to him all these years.
A man sat comfortably in a chair nearby, his legs crossed. He looked distinguished, with his slicked-back hair, a mix of black and grey, and his blue phoenix eyes that stared at the scene with a smirk dancing at the corners of his lips. Choi Min, Kim Jae-soo's father, was a tall, good-looking man of distinction who came from affluence and had never known adversity.
As he watched the woman's feeble defence against their furious son, he felt a sense of satisfaction. To him, justice was being served. She had been the one who initially took his child away from him, and now she was paying the price.
Choi Min had learned about the predicament of Jae-soo and his mother and had seized the opportunity to manipulate the situation to his advantage. He had approached Jae-soo in secrecy, portraying himself as a melancholy father whose former wife had run off with his child. His calculated words and sorrowful demeanor had been designed to manipulate Jae-soo, who had low self-esteem, was naïve, and easily swayed.
"Your mother took you away from me, Jae-soo," Choi Min had said, his voice filled with fabricated sorrow. "She wanted to hide your true heritage because she was afraid. Afraid that you would find out who you really are and claim what is rightfully yours."
Jae-soo, desperate for validation and acceptance, had believed his father's words. The revelation had filled him with a sense of betrayal and anger towards his mother. He couldn't see through Choi Min's deceit, too blinded by the promise of a life he felt he had been unjustly denied.
In the present moment, Choi Min watched the unfolding drama with a sense of triumph. He had succeeded in driving a wedge between Jae-soo and his mother, furthering his own interests at their expense.
"Jae-soo, please," his mother pleaded, her voice choked with emotion. "I only wanted to protect you."
"Protect me?" Jae-soo scoffed, his anger unabated. "You kept me from my father, from my rightful place. How is that protecting me?"
Choi Min's smirk widened slightly. He had planted the seeds of doubt and resentment, and now they were bearing fruit. He knew that the more Jae-soo turned against his mother, the easier it would be to manipulate him further.
If he had lived with me, he wouldn't be easy to fool, but as expected, his mother couldn't do one job right. This was Mr. Choi's frame of thought as Jae-soo naively trusted an estranged, affluent father above his mother, whom he should not have questioned.
"Jae-ah, listen to me," his mother pleaded, but Jae-soo, furious, interrupted her.
"You had so many chances to explain to me, but you didn't. And now that my father was able to locate me and tell me the full truth, you suddenly want to explain?" His voice was filled with bitterness as he stormed out of the house with his father, who couldn't hide his gloating expression.
