Tamar was doing pushups in the basement workout room in Quailius' and his house. Halfway through his set Quailius comes into the room and walks over to him slowly, unusually quiet. She squated in front of him, her eyes slowly wandering to his muscular arms. Tamar smirked.
"Like what you see, huh Pretty Scales?"
She let out a huff and rolled her eyes. "Shut up. I'm allowed to admire you." Yet her hood stayed tucked close to her neck, a sure sign of embarrassment. He chuckled and deliberately slowed his push ups, flexing his arms. Quailius stared a minute longer, frowning. Then she moved back and laid down, rolling onto her back so her face was directly underneath his. Tamar smiled, lowered to her, and kissed her cheek. He raised and lowered again, pressing his forehead to hers. He could feel her brow creased in worry. Tamar straightened up and stared into her black eyes for a few seconds.
"Something's upsetting you." He stated as he moved to a sitting position. Quailius sighed and got up, her back to him. She crossed her arms over her stomach in an almost self-cousious gesture. He frowned and crawled over to sit crossed legged in front of her.
"Quaili, talk to me, please?" He requested in a soft voice.
Quailius continued to avoid eye contact by Tilting her head away. Tamar sighed and brought his hands close to hers. He kept his palms up as an invitation, and let her decide when she wanted to speak, knowing how hard it was for her to be vulnerable, and willing to wait. After a few strained moments, Quailius relented. She unwound her arms from her middle and placed her hands in his. Tamar closed his fingers and held her hands gently. He looked up to meet her eyes.
"You can talk to me Quail." He assured.
She closed her eyes, her voice was shaky as she spoke again. "Remember how I wasn't feeling well so you practically begged me to go to the healer's?" Tamar nodded. "I was just worried about you. I don't like seeing you hurting." He squeezed her hands, more for his own assurance then hers.
"Well, I went this morning, and they found out why I feel so.....strange."
"Quailius, what did they find out? Is something wrong?" His concern for her grew each passing second she was silent.
"Whatever it is, we'll face it together just like everything else." He reassured her, trying to make his voice steady and sure.
"Nothing is wrong Tay, I'm fine.... it's just, I'll be getting sicker and sicker in the next, well around 7 months, and then I'll be alright again. Although probably very tired for a while." She attempted to sound nonchalant. It was a failed attempt.
"Quailius, what are you trying to tell me?" Tamar tilted his head to the side in confusion. She shifted, uncomfortable again.
"Tamar, I'm...." She took a deep breath and squeezed his hands. "I'm gravid." She whispered. "You're going to be a father, we're going to be parents." Tamar froze. Quailius frowned at his still form and grimaced in worry.
"You're serious?" He breathed in shock.
"Yes I'm serious Tamar." Quailius said with a hint if incredulousness. A wide smile broke across his face, stretching the scales unnaturally. Tamar wanted to leap forward and crush her in an hug, but restrained himself for her benefit.
"Quaili! Quailius we're going to have a kid?!! I'm going to be a father! This is incredible!" He cheered excitedly, bouncing where he sat. Quailius' lips turned up at the corners, but she offered no larger smile. Tamar picked up on it.
"Why are you still upset Pretty Scales? Do you..not want this?" He asked.
"I..." She trailed off and stared at the door. He wondered for a moment if she was thinking of bolting out of the room. "I don't know what to do." She admitted. He had never seen her so hopeless. No, nervous. She was nervous.
"Quaili, what's this about?" His tone was gentle and understanding.
"I didn't have a mother Tay. Or a father. And the woman who 'raised' me wasn't exactly a prime example of good parenting." She huffed one short, bitter laugh before going sober again. "I don't know what I'm doing. And I want this child to know how loved he is. I want him to feel wanted, something I never felt before you, but Tamar..." She looked into his eyes, despair in her own. "What if I mess this up? I can barely get over myself and be open with you but a kid? What if I become the distant parent that he thinks doesn't love him. What if I won't be a good mother, I don't even know what that looks like. Tamar I'm......" She took a breath, her voice breaking. "I'm... scared." She looked away, ashamed.
Tamar's exspression softened. He moved a little closer and brought one hand up, brushing her cheek with his finger tips once.
"Quailius, my love," His tone was even, soothing. "Is that really what you think? That you can't be a good mom because you didn't have one?" She nodded and looked down. "Hey, don't think about yourself like that. You'll do fine. Sure you can be reserved. But Quaili, you don't have to be perfect. No one is." He squeezed her hands. "You're more loving then you realize Quail. I have never once doubted that you love and want me. And our child won't either. We'll go at this together. I'll help you, and you can help me, ok?" He smiled at her, totally sure of himself. And Quailius did feel a bit less panicked because of his confidence. Yet she still curled in on herself reflexively.
"You don't know that." She said, stubborn.
"I know you, Pretty Scales. I know I love you. What more could I need to know we'll be happy?" Quailius sighed in defeat and Tamar grinned again.
"Come here?" He requested. Quailius's mouth finally curved into the smallest of smiles as she nodded and leaned close. He brought her in for a quick embrace, stroking a hand over her hood to calm her. Quailius buried her face in his shoulder.
"Thank you." She mumbled into him. He chuckled.
"We're going to have a kid." He said in awe before releasing her. He lit up, excited again.
"I can teach him how to wrestle and shoot a bow and hunt, you can teach him to throw knives." He gushed.
"I think we'll have to teach him to walk first." Quailius stated and Tamar laughed.
"I bet he'll have the most beautiful almond scales, just like you."
Qualius hummed. "And shining emerald eyes like you." Tamar agreed with a grin. Qualius was quiet for a moment.
"Tamar, thank you. I.." She looked deep into his eyes. "I love you."
"I love you too Quailius." He tapped his lips with a finger and she rolled her eyes, but nodded. Tamar stretched up to press his lips softly to hers. To his suprise Quailius moved into the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck to hold him closer. She pulled away after a few seconds and smiled.
"We're going to have a kid." She finally allowed herself to be joyful about it
"We're going to be great parents." Tamar replied with confidence. Quailius pecked his lips once more before moving a few feet away.
"You can continue your routine now." She said casually. The sound of Tamar's laughter filled the small basement.
