It had been a few weeks since I left Franks house and we hadn't really spoken, only in regard to Mary and things for her. I was working in the shop one morning when my cellphone rang, and I saw it was Mary's school.

"Hello?" I asked.

"Yes, this is Peabody Elementary school, is Vienna Morgan available?" The voice asked.

"This is she."

"Yes, we were wondering if you could come in for a chat with the principal, there had been an incident involving Mary Adler. We tried calling Frank Adler but there was no answer."

"He is probably teaching a class..." I said noting the time. "I'm on my way." I said and hung up. I cleared it with my boss and left.

What kind of incident could have happened at 9am? School  practically just started for the day. I got in my car and quickly drove to the school. As I parked, I saw Frank getting out of his truck and he looked at me.

"What are you doing here?" Frank asked.

"They called me and said they couldn't get ahold of you." I said and Frank sighed.

"I was teaching, they were calling my office phone. Finally, they wised up and called my cellphone." Frank said and I half nodded. "You can go, I got this now." Frank said and I shook my head, grabbing his arm to stop him from walking.

"We are both her guardians Frank. If something happened, we should both be here." I said and Frank groaned but nodded as we went to walk in the school. As we walked in, a kid and his mom where walking out and he had a bloody nose and was holding an ice pack to it.

"Don't worry we are on our way to the doctor..." The mother said as the little boy who was about in 5th grade whimpered. Frank and I stopped, looked and then looked at each other.

"You don't think...?" I asked and Frank sighed.

"I don't know, let's get inside." Frank said and we walk into the building. Once we got to the office we walked in and saw Mary sitting with her head down and backpack next to her in the chair. Frank and I both knelt down.

"Hey sweetie, you okay?" I asked and she looked at me with tears in her eyes and then I looked at Frank. The secretary spoke up.

"The principal is ready for you." Frank and I looked at her.

"Be back sweetie." I said and we stood up from our crouched down position and walked into the office.

"Thank you both for coming." She said as we walked into her office. "I'm Misses Davis, this principal." She said and we shook her hand then sat down once the office door was closed.

"What is going on?" I asked.

"Well Mister and Misses Adler -..."

"Oh no! We aren't married." Frank said and I nodded in agreement with him.

"Oh sorry, we just assumed..."

"No, not married. We are her guardians. Mister Adler and Miss Morgan." I said and she half nodded.

"Right, well we had an incident on the bus this morning and it's something that must be discussed." Misses Davis said.

"Okay, what happened? Mary is so mild tempered." I said.

"It seems that this child was picking on Mary and a friend of hers on the bus. Mary tried standing up for them and the little boy pushed Mary down in her seat. When she got back up, she grabbed a book and attacked the boy hitting him in the nose and breaking his nose." Misses Davis explained, and I groaned, and Frank sighed.

"Mary did this?" I asked and she nodded.

"We need to know how to resolve this. We have a zero-tolerance policy, and she could be expelled." Misses Davis said.

"Oh, you have got to be fucking kidding me." I mumbled and Frank shot me a glare as I sat back in my chair.

"I assure you Miss Morgan, this is serious." Misses Davis said.

"So, every other first-time offender in an offense here has been expelled? I mean I guess if so far is far." Frank said and I smirked at the condescending tone he had.

"Are either of you going to take this seriously?" She asked looking at us.

"Of course, we are." I said.

"You don't bluff us, we don't bluff you." Frank said.

"I need you both to see this is not acceptable behavior."

"And we get that. You think we condone hitting? I'm sorry the little boy's nose was broken but I mean do you condone bullying? Will that be dealt with? What was even said to set her off? Did you ask?" I asked and Misses Davis adjusted in her seat.

"They little boy that was picking on Mary was mentioning how her mother didn't love her and left her to be raised but an uncle and some lady. Same with the friend of Mary's who is in the same situation. He also is being raised by an aunt." Misses Davis said.

"So, let me get this straight...this boy picked on Mary because her mother has died, she is being raised the best 2 people know how to raise a child and when she gets picked on and defends herself against him, she gets in trouble? How is that even remotely fair?" I asked.

"And let's not forget to mention that this little boy brought up her mother leaving her. That's not even remotely okay! Mary's mother loved her but there were just underlying issues." Frank said and I could tell talking about Diane still hurt him.

"We understand, please know we talked to the boy and his mother before you two arrived, but this situation still needs to be dealt with." Misses Davis said.

"Listen, hitting is bad and we have taught Mary that from the moment she was a baby, but we still do. This will be dealt with but am I going to punish her for sticking up for herself to a bully...no. I don't believe Frank is going to either." I said.

"Today is a bad day and like Vienna said we will teach her you can't hit people, but 10-year-old bullies a 7-year-old, and she stands up to him well that makes me proud that she can defend herself. Yes, I understand some discipline needs to happen but expulsion..." Frank trailed off.

"Well, I think we can look back this one infraction knowing that there were multiple parties at fault. Mary will have to be out for a few days for a suspension for the fighting." Misses Davis said, and I groaned.

"This is bullshit..." I mumbled.

"Miss Morgan!" Misses Davis said.

"Vienna...please stop. You're not her family, I am. Let me handle this." Frank said and I was taken aback and hurt by what he just said to me. I couldn't let it show but he saw my eyes fill with tears and I instantly saw his face change, knowing what he said was wrong and uncalled for.

"All I can say to the two of you is. Mary is out for a few days, and we will no longer be visiting this incident." Misses Davis said, and I just sighed.

"Fine." Frank said and Misses Davis stood up and we knew she was dismissing up. She shook Franks hand and then went to shake mine, but I ignored it and walked out of the office. I walked to Mary and leaned down to kiss her cheek.

"See ya later kiddo." I said and kept walking out of the office and out of the school.

"Vienna wait!" Frank yelled as we got outside. I ignored him, getting in my car and driving off. Leaving Mary killed me but what Frank said killed me more.
