Wednesday sat on the sofa, her arms crossed in her lap as she sulked. She watched Enid, who was practically bouncing around the room, jump onto the armchair.
"Aren't you excited, Willa?" She flopped back down onto the cushions with a giggle. "It's a costume party! It's gonna be awesome! I've got a new dress, and my mommy's gonna do my makeup, and-and!"
The girl rolled off the sofa, but instead of starting to cry she laughed and bounced back up, running out of the room. As she darted out of the door, Weems came in, narrowly avoiding being run over by the energetic werewolf.
"Careful, Enid." She wandered over to Wednesday, holding something behind her back. "Hey, sweetie!"
"What do you want?" Wednesday grumbled, looking up at her caregiver without moving her head. Larissa smiled, silently asking to sit next to her. When the girl didn't say anything, she sat down.
"I have something for you. I know how you don't want to do this party, but you see how excited Enid is, and I think you should go."
Wednesday continued to pout, turning her body away from Larissa, not giving her a chance to see the outfit.
"Come, now. Don't be that way, it will look amazing on you." The woman smiled, moving it onto her lap, "Will you at least look at it before you decide you don't want it?"
Turning again slightly, the girl gave a courtesy glance only to roll her eyes at the amount of lace.
"Do I have to? It's ugly." Wednesday pointed out, "It's so... frilly."
Her caregiver gasped, wrapping an arm around her little in an attempt to lighten the conversation.
"But you love frills! And there's no color, it should be perfect for you."
Wednesday went boneless, limply flopping back against the back of the sofa and Weems' arm. She hid her face in her hands, holding her breath. Larissa frowned, cupping her cheek.
"Are you upset?" She put her other hand on Wednesday's knee, gently shaking it. "Talk to me, darling."
The little peeked out from behind her hands, staring up at Weems. She was silent for a minute before finally answering.
"I don't wanna go. I want to stay here with you."
"I'll be with you, Wednesday. You can stay with me if you want, although you do have to promise to participate just a little."
Enid came bounding into the room, her dress flowing behind her. "Ready?!"
"Stop screaming." Wednesday said as she stood up from the couch, roughly taking the clothing from Larissa's hands. "Fine. I'll change then we can go."
Wednesday walked out of the room, coming back with it backwards.
"You look ridiculous." Enid laughed as Weems tsked and walked over to her daughter. "It's a costume party not a wacky party."
"I'm not going-"
"Yes you are, we're just gonna fix your dress first." The woman picked her up, walking into the bathroom to give her some privacy. "Arms up."
Sighing, the girl raised her arms above her head, allowing the shapeshifter to turn the dress the right way. She shuffled out behind Weems, holding onto her arm for reasons even she wasn't sure of.
"Willa, show me your dress?" Wednesday wasn't planning on it, but her traitorous mother stepped out of the way, exposing her. She whined, trying to step behind her again but it was too late. "Omg, you look so pretty! Like a princess from old tv."
