Sebastian's POV//
We'd been following them down the hall, keeping about a hundred feet back to avoid being noticed. It was me, Ominis, Poppy, Natty, and Garreth; Imelda saw us leaving and decided to come along too when we'd told her about what was happening with y/n.
"Can't leave you lot of idiots to do this by yourselves, now can I?" she'd said before following us out of the Great Hall.
So far, we hadn't been spotted. We waited outside the doors of the Map Chamber and listened to what was happening inside before heading inside.
"What are we planning on doing once we get to the repository?" Ominis whispered. "We won't be much help if we don't have a plan."
"I'm hoping y/n can keep him distracted for long enough so we can catch him by surprise," I replied, "that's the only reason I let her take him this far. To convince him that they haven't been followed."
Ominis nodded. I pressed my ear against the door and waited until the talking stopped. I heard them start to descend some stairs next, and we waited a few more moments before heading inside after them.
I led the group into the room, where a surly-looking painting stared back at us upon entering. He gave us a nod but didn't say anything as we headed down the stairs after y/n.
I wasn't expecting the wide-open caverns at the bottom of the stairs. I wasn't sure what way to go or where to turn. I tried my best to listen ahead for the footsteps of y/n and the men who took her. We carefully made our way forward.
As we ventured through the caverns, I couldn't help that my mind kept wandering to y/n. I hoped she was still safe. I would kill that stupid bastard if he laid even a finger on her. I wouldn't hesitate to use the killing curse on him if he so much as gave me the impression that he intended to hurt her.
So far, he'd only used her to guide the way forward. I didn't know what his plans were with her after that. I only hoped we would reach the repository and have an opportunity to take him out before I had to find out what happened next.
Y/n's POV//
With everything going on, I forgot one of the most important details of how to get into the repository.
The Keeper's Wand.
You need it in order to get past the two giant guardians at the door. We were now standing before the door, and the two soldiers were marching forward. My heart was pounding, and I attempted to reach down into my dress where I'd previously had my wand but was frightened when I found that it wasn't there. I'd forgotten that I'd handed it off earlier. I took a deep breath and stepped back, rubbing my sweaty palms on the soft fabric of my dress. I still silently cursed that I'd chosen to wear high heels tonight. It was a poor decision on my part, knowing that something like this might happen after receiving Charle's letter.
"What now?' Charles said, backing up.
"You fight," I told him. "I don't have a wand. I can't help you with this."
"Andrews!" shouted Charles. "Give the girl your wand!"
"What?" one of his men said.
"You heard me!"
I was then handed the wand of one of Charles' goons. The poor guy ran back into the caverns to hide. I felt terrible for the guy, but avoiding the fight would probably save his life. I'd fought several of these things before, and they were no easy duel. As I watched the other men engage the guardians, I saw they were way more advanced than any of the ones I'd previously fought.
Charles was already launching attack after attack at the two guardians. I started to cast spells at them as well. The wand I was given was less compliant than mine, and I had to whip it around a fair bit harder to get it to do what I wanted it to do. Once I was used to it, though, the fight became easier.
I launched spell after spell at the guardians while trying my best to dodge the big slices it made with the sword. Even protego was dangerous to use against the guardians when they attacked. If they even got one hit in, I could either break several bones or be thrown over the walkway's edge into the darkness below us on either side.
One by one, I watched as Charles' men were either killed or launched off the edges of the walkway we were on, down to the bottom of the cliffs on either side of us. I didn't mind this, knowing it would make it easier to take Charles out once my friends got here.
Or... I could take him out now. While he's busy fighting the guardians, this might be the perfect opportunity.
While fighting the two considerable figures in front of us, I slowly started falling back so that I was out of Charles' line of sight. I kept fighting for a moment before aiming my wand at Charles.
And then I hesitated.
I knew what spell would take him out the quickest, but I'd also made myself promise that I'd stop using that spell. How far was I willing to go to win? How far was it okay to go to save others?
I know what most of my friends would say.
And yes, dark magic does leave a stain on your soul; I'd known that for years, ever since I started using it. I knew it wasn't okay. But in situations like this? Was it okay? What would my friends say if they saw me do this?
As I stood there debating what to do, I watched as one of the guardians finally fell, plummeting off the walkway's edge. There was now only one left.
As far as Charles and his men went, it was only him and two other people. I needed to make my move now if I was going to do anything.
If I did this, it would save my friends from having to fight, which was probably the best-case scenario.
I quickly made my decision and went with it.
