"I'm hopeless, Donna," Itzel groaned, pushing around her fries. "This is so stupid. It's like just as I'm getting over him, he walks his stupid body to my house. Then he has the audacity to put his stupid hands all over my hands!" Donna slumped back in her seat, defeated. The night of the 'Porch Swing Incident,' as the girls dubbed it, Itzel called Donna to tell her everything. The two met up again after school the next day at the Hub to discuss the incident in person.
Donna glared across the room at Hyde, leaning against the wall surrounded by the boys of the gang. She looked between her best friend and the boy. In her eyes, they never made sense; no boy in all of Wisconsin was good enough for her best friend. According to Donna, Itzel deserved one of those down-to-earth sexy guys from somewhere warm like California or a rich, funny man in a big house in suburban Connecticut—someone who could take care of her physically and emotionally. So, definitely not Steven Hyde.
"It's weird he just showed up at your house like your boyfriend or something when he's made it clear he's not," Donna grumbled, staring at the boys. Itzel's heart sank a little at the statement. She knew Donna was right: he wasn't her boyfriend and had no clear interest in being that. But he had taken her out openly without hesitation—something she had begged God for him to do for years. She felt dumb chasing a man. She deserved to be chased, to have a man sweep her off her feet like a princess.
"This totally blows," Itzel whispered, crossing her arms. She rubbed the soft hairs on her arms, trying to keep herself from turning around.
"Are they talking about me?" she asked. Donna broke her glare to look softly at her friend. She shook her head and offered a gentle smile.
"If they were, I would hit him for you, Jello," Donna offered. Itzel wanted him to talk about her; she wanted him to tell all his friends that she was the funniest and sweetest girl he had ever met. She wanted him to confess his feelings and make her his princess, to sweep her off her feet so they could ride off into the sunset, living out a fairytale.
"I think I'd hit him first," she lied. Donna laughed; the sound was homey. Whenever Donna laughed, it made Itzel feel safe. The world would go quiet for those few moments, and everything felt right. "God, can he stop looking over here?" Donna remarked, glancing back up at the boys.
Itzel looked back at the boys. Hyde was staring at her, the kind of stare he had on the porch swing. He smiled, but she couldn't smile back. That piece of her that had floated away needed to come back. Whether he began to feel for her or not, she needed to get up and move on with her life.
"Why did you look?!" Donna exclaimed in a hushed tone. Itzel panicked, throwing her hands up. She didn't do well under pressure, clearly. Donna straightened her posture and pretended to be focused on the ads imprinted on the napkin holder. "Can you believe the Burlington has such great prices?" she forced out.
"Well, I sure can," Erik added, pulling up a chair to the table. "You look like you've seen a ghost, Jello. You okay?" She nodded, shoving her hands into her lap. Her fingers dug into her jeans as she held her composure.
"I love the Burlington—all the cute mom shops there," Fez threw in. A light bulb went off in Kelso's head when he heard "mom." A grin crept onto his face. "We should go to Burlington," he shouted, shaking Fez.
"If I wanted to watch you two drool over middle-aged women, we could just go to Jello's house," Erik stated. The two drooling boys looked at Itzel excitedly.
"Fumigated," she forced out quickly. Everyone looked at her strangely. Hyde especially looked at her like she was from Mars. "My house is getting fumigated," she continued in a shaky tone. "I was just asking if I could crash at Donna's tonight."
