Tommy had been struggling to sleep over the past few weeks. He didn't understand why. Phil would put him and Tubbo to bed, read them a story, and then lights would go out. As soon as the lights went out, Tubbo was normally out like a light, but Tommy couldn't. He'd lie awake for what felt like hours. Often hearing Techno, Wilbur, y/n, and eventually Phil go up to their rooms. He'd be tossing and turning for hours, unable to sleep. And then when Phil came to wake them up in the morning, Tommy was so tired. He wasn't having nightmares or anything when he did sleep. Just the thought of actually sleeping scared him.
One night him and Tubbo were out in the garden. Tommy was swinging and Tubbo up a tree. They had been playing football earlier on, and Tommy was covered in mud. Phil stood at the back door at about 8.00pm and shouted the boys in.
"Tommy! Toby! It's time to get ready for bed!" The boys heard distantly.
"5 more minutes, Phil?" Tommy called back, dreading the hours to come.
"Sorry, Tommy, but no, you both have school tomorrow."
"But Phil!-"
"No buts, Tommy. You need rest for school." Phil said as he and Tubbo walked through the back door.
Tommy pouted but didn't protest any further.
"Are you okay, Tom's?" Tubbo asked as the two boys headed upstairs.
"Fine Tub's." Was all Tommy responded. Tommy decided to go for a shower to put off going to bed for longer. And the fact he was muddy.
After spending half an hour in the shower, Tommy put on his PJ'S and walked through to the shared bedroom. Phil was there waiting, and Tubbo had picked out the book. The 2 gathered on the bottom bunk while Phil sat on the floor reading. Once the book was done, Tubbo went up to the top bunk, and Phil tucked in both boys. He said the usual "goodnight, love you both, come and find me if something is wrong," and put off their light, leaving the room.
Tommy waited a few minutes before calling on Tubbo.
"Tubbo? Are you awake?" Tommy whispered quietly. As expected, Tommy got no response from the younger boy. He lay on his back, staring at the top of the bunk. He decided he couldn't take it anymore and quietly got out of bed and made his way downstairs. Phil and Wilbur were sitting in the living room watching something on TV. Wilbur was the first to notice Tommy standing in the doorway.
"Hey Tom's. Are you alright?" Wilbur spoke. Tommy nodded in response, and Wilbur stuck his arm out, instigating for Tommy to sit beside him. The 9 year old walked over to his brother and sat down beside him, placing his head on Wilbur's chest. Phil smiled at the sight.
"Do you want anything, Tommy? A drink? Something to eat?" Phil asked, smiling at his son.
"Some water, please, dad." Tommy mumbled. Wilbur put his arm around his brother and began running his fingers through Tommy's hair. Tommy would never admit it, but he loved when Wilbur did that.
Phil returned with Tommys water, and Tommy thanked him. They sat watching the TV in silence until Phil spoke up.
"Are you okay, Tommy? Do you want to go back to bed?"
"No, Phil!" Tommy responded a bit too quickly.
"Why not?" Phil was now concerned. Yes, okay, the boys were still young, but it was normally Tubbo that protested going to bed, not Tommy.
"Can't sleep." Tommy replied back.
"Why not Tommy? Are you having nightmares?" Wilbur asked his brother, obvious concern in his voice. He had nightmares when he was Tommy's age, too. It was horrible.
"No, Wil, I just can't sleep when Phil puts me to bed. I don't know why."
Wilbur and Phil exchanged a look. If Tommy couldn't sleep, then there was no point in putting him to bed at the same time as Tubbo anymore. Their bedtime was normally 8.30.
"How about this, Tom's?" Phil spoke from the other side of the couch, gaining the attention of both boys. "You go to bed now at 9.00 instead of 8.30. It may help. We can try it for a while and see how it goes?"
"Yeah, Phil, that sounds good!" Tommy smiled from the other side of the couch.
"I'm glad." They sat for a while longer. It had got to about 9.30, and Wilbur was still running his hands through Tommy's hair. He hadn't realised, but Tommy was now asleep. Phil noticed.
"Wilbur, Wilbur!" Phil whispered, shouted, and pointed to Tommy. Wilbur looked down and smiled at his brother.
"Will I take him upstairs or you?" Wilbur mouthed to his father. Phil mouthed back, "I will," and walked up to them. He lifted Tommy as gently as he could, carrying him bridal style so as not to wake him. Tommy felt the sensation of him being picked up and reached his hands up behind Phil's neck. He looked like a koala clinging to a tree.
Wilbur and Phil both smiled, and Phil carried Tommy upstairs. Phil was being super quiet, so he didn't wake up Tubbo. He put Tommy down on his bunk and kissed him goodnight.
"Dadza?" Phil heard a sleepy voice call out. Tubbo it was.
"It's okay, Tub's. Go back to sleep. Love you lots." Phil spoke. He saw his son turn over and mumble something. "Love you too, dad." Phil maked out from the mumble. He smiled and exited the boys room.
