Chapter 31

PAST.

In the Baek ancestral home, the older generations were overjoyed as the precious child of the new patriarch, Baek Mi-reu, was about to turn one year old. They wanted to celebrate this special milestone with a grand dohl.

The other branches that had raised their heads when Ji-Hu hadn't sat in that position were now quiet as chickens. Though they looked overjoyed about the grand dohl happening, some of them wanted to stir the pot.

The family butler and servants began their preparations by choosing a charming venue in the large ancestral home—a beautiful garden adorned with vibrant flowers and twinkling lights. They invited friends, business partners, and other prominent families to join them in the festivities. The theme they chose was a whimsical animal wonderland, filled with the cutest creatures you could imagine. This theme was for the children attending, but the adults had their own sections for mingling. This party was a cover to officially introduce Baek Mi-reu to the others and solidify his position in the Baek Clan.

As the day of the dohl arrived, the family woke up with excitement, especially the servants who were following the orders of the butler to make sure everything was perfect. Some family members were annoyed by Baek Ji-Hu's way of blocking their own children's chances by already giving a one-year-old child the ultimate position of heir.

Meanwhile, the nanny dressed Baek Mi-reu in a delightful animal-themed outfit, complete with a tiny lion onesie and a cute little hat with ears. Baek Mi-reu looked absolutely adorable!

Guests started to arrive, bringing gifts and warm wishes for Baek Mi-reu. The garden was transformed into a magical place with colorful balloons, animal-shaped decorations, and a large banner that read "Happy 1st Birthday, Baek Mi-reu!"

While all this was happening, Kim Jae-soo tried his best to avoid appearing in the sight of people. He knew he was a stain on his child's life—a scheming ger mother.

He was dressed beautifully, but he avoided everyone, including Ji-Hu, who wanted him to stand together for the traditional doljabi ceremony.

The highlight of the dohl was the traditional doljabi ceremony. Baek Mi-reu was placed in front of a table filled with various objects, each symbolizing a different future path. With eager anticipation, Baek Mi-reu reached out and grabbed a bunch of rolled notes (money), indicating a future filled with wealth.

Laughter filled the air as everyone enjoyed delicious food, including a beautifully decorated animal-themed cake. Kim Jae-soo couldn't hide for long because it was time for the cake cutting. He was happy to stand by his husband and son, but he knew he was a stain for them and without him there, no one would gossip.

Baek Mi-reu's parents carefully cut the cake, making a wish for their little one's bright future. Kim Jae-soo could feel their stares and judging looks. He wished he came from a better background and had gotten with Ji-Hu the right way; maybe then his son wouldn't suffer mockery behind his back. The people watching held their tongues so as not to offend the youngest patriarch of the Baek Clan. Ji-Hu was ruthless and didn't bat an eye when dealing with even his family, let alone outsiders.

In the furthest corner stood Choi Su-Jin, glaring at Jae-soo standing beside the tall, handsome man. This should have been her and her child, but that bastard of her father took away her betrothed. If she had successfully married into the Baek Clan, wouldn't she be a matriarch by now?

"I thought you said Baek Ji-Hu doesn't want anything to do with that brat?" one of her friends asked. It was a beautiful ger with a lot of makeup, almost covering the cinnabar mark on his jaw down to his long neck.

This comment caused the other girl beside him to elbow him lightly as the rest watched Su-Jin scowl. They knew she was mad, but who told her to be too prideful? These weren't the school days anymore; she should know she really had no place in the Baek Clan.

"He doesn't, trust me. He in fact told me that he was doing this for his dying grandma," she lied confidently, trusting their childhood friendship. What Ji-Hu hated most was a whiny, weak lover.

She had always stayed close to him but never had the courage to talk about anything other than business and work. She made sure to appear perfect in his eyes and in the eyes of those around him, but his dying grandma was the only one who disliked her so much.

"Oh really, then I am sure he will do what he says," another girl with a gap in her teeth spoke. She was curvy and luscious but her face was very ordinary.

Su-Jin knew if she tried to cause Kim Jae-soo trouble here, she wouldn't end well. Her father had always told her not to bother the boy anymore since he was their bargaining chip to stay attached to the Baek conglomerate.

Looking away, the wheels in her head turned swiftly. She wondered how she could attack him. Kim Jae-soo was a crybaby, so he obviously wouldn't complain when she did something to him in secret.

Throughout the day, there were games, music, and even a petting zoo where the children could interact with gentle animals. Baek Mi-reu giggled with delight as he touched fluffy bunnies and watched colorful birds flutter around.

As the sun began to set, the dohl came to a close. Baek Mi-reu, surrounded by love and laughter, had a day filled with joy and cherished memories. Kim Jae-soo quickly took Baek Mi-reu from the nanny and rushed back into the bedroom he and his husband were staying in for the night since this wasn't their real home.

Kim Jae-soo felt relieved once he entered the bedroom with his already tired baby. He rocked his baby in his arms slowly to help him fall asleep better after quickly bathing and changing him. Kim Jae-soo had gotten used to caring for his child with the help of Boss Shin Young, who kept teaching him new ways to care for his baby.

Baek Ji-Hu entered the room after having the butler send everyone off. He looked at his wife and child on the bed with his dark eyes that usually made people think he could see their souls.

Sigh.

He placed a soft kiss on their heads before going to take his bath. He wished he could read Jae-soo's thoughts since they hardly spoke to each other.

If only things were a little different.
