As the days went by, the house was filled with the soft hum of daily life. Ammi would feed Haseena, Veer would quietly sit nearby, reading his picture books, and Vansh… Vansh was always up to something.

One afternoon, as Ammi tried to put Haseena to sleep, Vansh grabbed a cookie from the kitchen, his little face full of determination.

“Mujhe baby ko khana dena hai!” he declared, holding the cookie out in front of Haseena’s face.

Ammi looked up, eyes wide with shock. “Vansh! Nahi, yeh tumhara biscuit hai, baby ko nahi.”

But Vansh, too innocent to understand, gently tried to push the cookie toward Haseena’s mouth, all the while muttering, “Baby ko khana chahiye... cookie khana hai.”

Veer, seeing this, rushed over and grabbed the biscuit out of Vansh’s hand. “Dekh bhai, baby ko yeh nahi, milk chahiye. Tujhe samajh mein aaya?”

Vansh looked at Veer with his big eyes and then turned to Ammi. “Toh main khana kahan jaa ke doon?”

Ammi laughed, her heart warming despite the chaos. “Tumhe kuch nahi karna. Tum apna cookie khana khaye, chhoti ko chhodo.”

Vansh still wasn’t convinced, but he plopped down next to Ammi, nibbling at his cookie and occasionally glancing at Haseena with pure curiosity.

Vansh again went to the kitchen to get more cookies 🤣

“Yeh kya tamasha laga rakha hai?” Dadi’s voice cut through the calm like a blade.

Ammi looked up, already bracing herself.

“Bacchi ke sath itna pyaar? Waise toh sab pareshaan the hospital mein... ab sab hero ban gaye ho?”

Veer quietly scooted away, clutching his book tighter. Vansh blinked at Dadi, still chewing his half-eaten cookie.

“Maaji, bas thodi der ke liye sab saath baithe the,” Ammi said softly.

“Saath baithe the ya mujra chal raha tha yahan?” Dadi snapped, her dupatta flaring as she walked in.

“Mujhe toh lagta hai tumne yeh ladki paida karke ghar ki izzat hi mitti mein mila di. Pehle se hi beemar, kamzor... ab uspe yeh sab nautanki!”

Ammi's throat tightened, but she stayed quiet. She had learned silence was her only shield here.

“Waise bhi,” Dadi continued, eyes narrowing at Haseena, “yeh bachpan se hi bimaar rahegi. Dekh lena. Ghar pe bojh banegi.”

Just then, tiny footsteps echoed through the room—Vansh came running in, holding a biscuit in his tiny hands.

“Ammi... baby royi toh nahi? Usko bhook lagi hogi na?”

Ammi, drained but still smiling, looked at him. “Nahi beta, abhi toh so rahi thi.”

But Vansh stepped closer to the baby, his eyes full of innocent concern. He gently brought the biscuit near her mouth.

“Thoda sa taste kar le na... good waala biscuit hai.”

Veer chuckled from behind, trying not to burst out laughing. “Pagal hai kya? Baby doodh peeti hai, biscuit nahi!”

Ammi quickly adjusted the baby and picked Vansh up, hugging him tight.

“Mera chhota pyaar... tu toh sabse best bhai banega.”

Dadi, who had been watching silently, immediately softened as Vansh climbed into Ammi’s lap. Her heart melted at the sight.

“Arey mera chhota shehzada... kis se pooch ke apne biscuit ka tyag kar raha tha?”

Vansh replied with all his toddler-logic pride, “Baby meri behen hai.”

Dadi pulled him close and kissed his cheek. Then she turned to Veer and hugged him too.

“Tu toh meri jaan hai... tujhmein alag hi roshni hai. Aur Veer—mera sher! Tum dono ke bina toh meri saans bhi adhoori hai.”

But the moment her eyes landed on the newborn again, her face hardened. The warmth vanished.

“Kaash... yeh bhi ladka hoti.”

Ammi's smile faded, but her voice stayed calm. “Ladka ya ladki... dono mere liye ek jaise hain.”

Dadi didn’t respond. She turned, gathered her beloved grandsons close, and walked out, leaving Ammi alone with her daughter—still too small to understand the weight of being unloved.
