season two, episode thirteen
The trio walked back toward the house in silence, nothing but the sound of crickets and the grass crunching beneath their feet. Rick walked between his son and Emory, in a daze.
"You bit too?" Carl broke the silence.
"No," his dad answered.
"Shane was," Carl said.
"That wasn't Shane. You know that," Rick replied.
"Used to be. What happened? You guys attacked? I mean, I— I heard a gunshot, but I didn't see any walkers nearby. How did Shane die?" Carl asked, the question Emory had on her mind but didn't care too much to know. Shane wasn't a good man, but Rick and Carl clearly cared for him.
Rick stopped to face his down, breathing heavily. Emory stopped behind him, the sound of growling making her turn to the right.
Horror filled her at the sight of all the walkers headed toward them. Her knees gave out and Rick caught her before she could give up.
"Oh my God, go, go,go," he said forcing Carl to run as he yanked Emory up right.
"We have to go, you gotta run," he said to her, her brain was still processing but her legs were moving.
Rick dragged them behind a tree and crouched."We—we gotta get to the house. Tell the others" Carl panicked and Maggie suddenly flashed into Emory's mind.
"Oh god," she said holding her hand to her mouth to stop from crying. This was everything she feared and more, there was no stopping that many.
"We'll never get through that. Can't go around. I need you both to say close. Go!" Rick whispered before the three broke into a sprint toward the barn. The walkers were so close, growling at them as they ran.
The three made it to the barn and slammed the door, blocking it from opening. Emory squeezed her eyes shut and covered her ears as the walkers banged against the barn door, growling for their next meal.
She felt hands cover hers and she opened her eyes to see Rick staring at her, his blue eyes wide with fear as he mouthed something that she couldn't hear. He pulled her hands from her ears and looked at her with seriousness.
"We can get out of here, alive but I need you to focus. We made it out of that bar, we can make it out of here," he said before pulling her with him and Carl.
Rick found cans of gasoline and instructed them to start pouring them around the barn. Emory did as instructed, trusting that Rick Grimes would keep her alive.
"Alright, here we go. Come on, hurry. Oh shit, alright okay. Up there, hurry,"Rick said as the walkers started breaking down the walls of the barn.
"Well what about you?" Carl asked as Emory started to climb the ladder to the top of the barn.
