You and your boyfriend, Shawn, we're hosting a Labor Day party. You didn't want it to be too huge, but you hadn't seen some of your friends in a while, and Shawn wanted to invite over some of the guys.

The only people who could make it were Matt, Cam, Jack Gilinsky, and two of your closest friends. It started out casual, just eating some pizza and drinking cans of coke that Shawn picked up from the store on his way home, but then someone found a bunch of water guns in your storage closet and everyone ended up having a huge water-fight.

By the time it got dark, a lot of people left to go home. Cam, Jack, and one of your friends were the only people left besides you and Shawn to gather around the campfire Shawn set up to roast s'mores.

It was really fun, because after everyone had been eating for a while, Jack ran inside and returned holding Shawn's Taylor guitar by the neck, giving him a sheepish grin.

It didn't take much convincing to get Shawn to play a campfire jam for us, and after it was over, everyone just kept naming songs and Shawn would play them and we would all sing, not caring how off-key we were.

"This is the best Labor Day I think I've ever had," your friend says from across the fire. The heat it was giving off was most likely melting your converse, but you didn't pay any attention to it.

"Me too," you agree, smiling.

"I'm getting eaten to death by mosquitoes," Shawn says quietly, slapping his upper-arm.

"This was really fun, guys, but I think I need to head home," your friend says as she stands to her feet, walking around her chair to dodge the fire and opening her arms up to hug you.

"I'll see you later, girlfriend," she laughs. You return the hug, squeezing her tightly before finally letting her go.

"I'll walk you to your car," Cam offers. "It's just kinda dark, and you never know."

She grins. "That'd be great, thanks."

The two of them circle the yard and make their way towards the fence, before disappearing behind it.

"Well, I'm gonna go get some bug spray," Shawn says as he stands up, leaning his guitar against his chair.

He runs towards the back door, and upon hearing it slam shut, Jack turns to face you and giggles.

"And then there were two," he winks.

You laugh, crossing your right leg over your left. "I have that last song stuck in my head."

"Me too. You know, I'm pretty sure I can play that on the guitar. It's only like three chords throughout the whole song."

"You play guitar?" you raise an eyebrow.

"A little bit," Jack bites his lip.

You reach for Shawn's guitar and outstretch your arm, the fire too low to catch it. "Let me hear."

He takes it from you, turning it sideways and setting it on his lap.

"Let's see. . . "

He examines the strings, placing his fingers where they go before giving it a strum. "Okay yeah," he nods, switching chords and strumming again. He gets faster and faster before he was playing the song at a normal pace, humming the words quietly to himself.

His dark hair was shining in the reflection of the flames, part of his face illuminated and the other part darkened. He was smiling, getting into the groove of the song.

You clear your throat before letting the lyrics roll off your tongue, singing along as he played.

He smiles at you as he scoots closer, becoming dorky with each move of the chords he makes, his facial expressions sending you into a fit of laughter.

You continue to sing, and to be completely honest, you didn't even sound that bad.

"What's going on?" a voice booms, causing you and Jack both to jump. It was Shawn, who you didn't even hear come out of the house. You could hardly see his face since he wasn't standing very close, but you could sense the confusion and anger in his voice.

"Hey, Shawn, Jack plays guitar!" you exclaim, "he was just showing me - "

"Why are you sitting so close to Y/N?" Shawn asks Jack, ignoring you.

"What?" Jack looks from you to Shawn and back again. "Oh, no, bro, it's not like that."

"Why are you playing my guitar?"

You scrunch your eyebrows. Shawn was never this demanding, especially around you or Jack.

"Chill out, I wasn't burning it, I was just playing something," Jack explains.

"I don't care, you didn't ask me if you could. You know what, that's not the point. It's really late, just go home, Jack."

"What? What are you talking about? What is the point?"

"I said to go home!" Shawn's voice cracks.

You bite your tongue, feeling uncomfortable. They've never argued like this, and Shawn was acting so weird all of a sudden.

"You need some sleep, dude," Jack rolls his eyes, holding his hands up in surrender after setting down Shawn's guitar. "Sorry for doing whatever it is I did. I'll see you later."

He shoves his hands in his pockets and shuffles out of the circle of lawn chairs, walking across the yard towards the fence.

"Bye Jack!" you call after him, awkwardly waving as Shawn remains silent.

He waves back, disappearing behind the fence. You turn to Shawn, who was gripping the back of the chair he was standing behind and staring at the ground.

"What the hell?" you speak up.

He groans. "Sorry."

"No, what was that back there? You literally made him leave for no reason!"

"No reason? Did you even see the way he was looking at you?" he shoots back.

"So that's what this is about?" you scoff. "You think I like Jack?"

"Well, I don't know about you, but I think he definitely has a thing for you."

You try not to laugh. "And why do you think that? Because he tried to play the guitar and I sang along?"

"No, just because. . . baby girl, you've never sang with me while I played guitar like that. We've never really had a moment like that, like, you always just said you can't sing and I respected that, but then you sang for Jack, and I just got so jealous," he buries his face in his hands after easing into the chair next to you. "God, I'm an idiot, aren't I?"

You reach out and rub his back, pulling in into your side. "No, cuddlebug," you say quietly. "You're not an idiot. I hope you don't feel like you're competing with Jack, or anyone else for that matter, though. I'm not searching for happiness in anyone other than you."

He lifts his head, his eyes meeting yours. "Really?"

"Really," you nod. "I love you, Shawn."

"I love you too, Kitten," he smiles, before cupping your chin and pulling your head towards his until his lips meet yours.
