( the present )

THE NEXT DAY Claire laid curled up on her bed underneath her comfy bedsheets. Classes were done for the day and Audery was leading cheer practice — she had offered to since Claire barely made it through their classes without feeling like she wanted to curl up on the floor and die.

No matter how hard she tried not to think of him it seemed all she could do was reminisce the past.

Ben was Claire's first.

And she was his.

Ben was her first boy friend, first crush, her first kiss, her first boyfriend, first "I love you." He was her first everything.

Even now, Ben was her first heartbreak.

And so she wasted the rest of her day laying in bed thinking of she and Ben had and what they could have been. It wasn't like she could just get over him (unlike Ben who seemed to get over her in a second).

One minute everything was fine and they were happy together, the next minute they weren't and Claire didn't even know why.

Was it something she had done?

Claire rolled over to face her night stand locking eyes with the vase of roses Ben had gotten the night before he broke up with her. It had been to day and the roses colour already seemed to begin to fade.

Not wanting to look at them away longer, Claire rolled back over to the other side of her bed. What she didn't see when she turned away was one of the rose petals fall shortly followed by another.

And the longer time went on, the longer they were apart the faster the petals fell from the once beautiful bouquet of roses that Ben had gifted her — the same flowers that were enchanted so they never aged a day. And yet the petals still fell onto her bedside table. As if the One thing that kept them alive was dying inside.

MEANWHILE, WELL CLAIRE spent her time laying in bed rethinking her once blooming relationship, Ben and Mal were on the their first date as an official couple.

The pair sat on the laid out picnic blanket next the unchanged lake when Ben suggested they go for a swim.

"What? Right now?" Mal questioned, hoping she miss heard him as he stood up.
