Chapter 39

Jae-soo and Na-ri looked like they had come back from a near-death experience. It was only the second day of their internship, but they were already feeling drained, both physically and emotionally.

Mr. Park had truly lived up to his nickname, the Sunflower Tyrant. For Kim Jae-soo, the day had been grueling. He had been told to rewrite and reconstruct the summary he had done the previous day, nearly missing lunch. Before he could even catch his breath, he was sent to get lunch for Mr. Park. Then, without a break, he had to follow Mr. Park to a meeting and take notes of every word said.

Ms. Hwang, on the other hand, acted like an empress behind the camera but transformed into a white lotus whenever she reported the news. Na-ri felt like he was walking on spikes, not eggshells. One of her assistants had gotten slapped for allowing Ms. Hwang to experience even the slightest discomfort when she brushed her hair.

"Suddenly, I feel like telling my father to forget about starting from the bottom and hiding my identity as the son of the owner of 'ANRANG'," Na-ri lamented as he drove them home.

Kim Jae-soo nodded in agreement, grateful that they wouldn't have to return to the station for the rest of the week. "At least we have a few days to recover," he said, trying to find a silver lining.

They drove in silence for a while, the exhaustion settling heavily on them. The city's lights blurred past the car windows, a stark contrast to the whirlwind of their thoughts.

"I honestly don't know how people survive in that place every day," Na-ri muttered, his grip tightening on the steering wheel.

Jae-soo sighed. "I guess they get used to it. Or they don't have a choice."

When they finally reached their apartment, they dragged themselves inside, too tired to even talk about dinner. Na-ri collapsed onto the couch, while Jae-soo made a beeline for the kitchen, grabbing a couple of energy drinks from the fridge.

Handing one to Na-ri, he said, "Here, this might help."

Na-ri took the drink with a grateful nod. "Thanks. I swear, if Ms. Hwang snaps her fingers one more time, I might just lose it."

Jae-soo laughed softly. "And if Mr. Park asks me to rewrite another summary, I might just run away."

They both sipped their drinks, the silence between them comfortable but heavy with shared exhaustion.

"Tomorrow, we rest," Jae-soo said, finally breaking the silence.

"Agreed," Na-ri replied. "But seriously, I suddenly don't want to work there anymore. I thought she was a role model, but this madam isn't modeling anything good."

Jae-soo smiled. "At least you have a choice. Once it's known that you are her boss's son, she won't have the face to act presumptuously around you."

Na-ri sighed and ruffled his curls, which had grown longer. His stomach rumbled, causing Kim Jae-soo to roll his eyes in annoyance. He knew Na-ri could never be too tired to eat. He stood up and went into the kitchen to microwave some side dishes and leftover rice for them to eat before going to bed.

"I swear, you're like a bottomless pit, like in the legends; from your stomach, someone could get anywhere, " Jae-soo teased.

"You know, you're the best, right? Always taking care of me."

Jae-soo laughed softly. "Well, someone has to. You'd probably starve if left to your own devices."

"Hey, I can cook!" Na-ri protested weakly.

"boiling water doesn't count," Jae-soo replied with a smirk. Na-ri followed him into the kitchen with a pout, leaning against the counter as Jae-soo prepared their meal.

"Thanks for this, Jae-soo. I'm so drained, but I don't think I could sleep without eating something."

"Yeah, yeah," Jae-soo replied with a small smile. "I know you too well, Na-ri. You'd probably wake up in the middle of the night and raid the fridge if I didn't feed you now."

Na-ri chuckled. "Guilty as charged."

The microwave beeped, and Jae-soo carefully took out the hot dishes, setting them on the small dining table. They sat down, the simple meal in front of them looked like the most delicious after a long, exhausting day.

As they ate, Na-ri sighed contentedly. "This is nice. This is why I Love you, Jae-soo." giving Jae soo a finger heart

"more like this is why I love food," Jae-soo replied between bites rolling his eyes.

"What.... No I say no such thing," Na-ri said shoving food down his throat.

"And about Ms. Hwang... I'm going to give it some more time. Maybe she was just having a bad day."

Jae-soo nodded. "Maybe. But if things don't get better, you should consider talking to your dad. You deserve to be treated with respect, no matter who you are."

Na-ri smiled. "I'll keep that in mind."

They finished their meal in comfortable silence, both feeling more at ease in their own company and having a warm meal. When they were done eating, they cleaned up and got ready for bed.

In bed, Jae-soo wanted to call his mother and tell her about how his first two days interning had gone. But instead, his phone rang, displaying "Eomma" on the screen.

"Eomma, I missed you," he said happily.

His mother laughed on the other end of the call. She was looking through her iPad at her design manuscript, letting Jae-soo talk about his internship. Though she had called him for another reason, she was happy to listen to her son.

"I missed you too, Jae-soo," she said warmly. "Tell me everything. How was it?"

Jae-soo eagerly recounted his experiences, from the strict demeanor of Mr. Park to the hectic tasks he had been given. "It was exhausting, Eomma, but I think I'm learning a lot. Mr. Park is tough, but he knows his stuff."

"I'm so proud of you, my dear," Ae-Cha replied. "It sounds like you're doing wonderfully. Just keep your head up and stay focused."

Jae-soo smiled, feeling a sense of pride and comfort from his mother's words. "Thank you, Eomma."

When Kim Jae-soo finished talking, his mother finally asked if they could meet the next day in the late afternoon. She mentioned she was in Seoul and Jae soo suggested meeting at the cafe where he worked since he would be there after his classes the next day.

Though Jae-soo was confused, he was happy she had come and worried about where she was staying. She reassured him by saying she was safe and had a lot to tell him when they met.

"Don't worry, Jae-soo," Ae-Cha said softly. "I'm staying in a safe place, and I'll explain everything when we meet tomorrow."

"Okay, Eomma," Jae-soo replied, still feeling a bit uneasy but trusting his mother's words. "I'm looking forward to seeing you."

"Me too, my dear. Get some rest now. We have a lot to talk about tomorrow."

"I will. Good night, Eomma," Jae-soo said, feeling a mix of anticipation and worry.

"Good night, Jae-soo," she replied warmly before they hung up.

Jae-soo lay back in bed, staring at the ceiling. He couldn't help but feel a little nervous about what his mother had to tell him.
