Chapter 58.

Disoriented, Ji Hu turned his head slowly. To his right, he saw Man Sung-ho sitting on the sofa in the VIP hospital room, his face a mix of relief and concern. On the other side, Kim Jae-soo sat beside his bed, fast asleep, his breathing soft and even.

"Ji Hu, you're awake!" Sung-ho exclaimed, moving forward to hold his friend's hand but stopping short at Ji Hu's glare. The disturbance caused Kim Jae-soo to stir slightly, but he remained asleep.

Man Sung-ho made a zipping motion across his lips, indicating he would keep quiet. The hospital room door opened gently, and Na Ri entered, looking at the two men who were staring at him. Sung-ho quickly pulled him back out of the room and closed the door softly behind them.

Ji Hu turned his attention back to the sleeping Kim Jae-soo, his hand instinctively reaching out to caress his hair. The gentle touch softened Ji Hu's usually stoic expression, his eyes filled with tenderness. The tightness in his chest eased, replaced by a wave of relief. He continued to brush his fingers through Kim Jae-soo's hair, feeling the soft strands slip between them.

Kim Jae-soo's eyes fluttered open, his gaze initially unfocused. As he remembered where he was, he quickly sat up, his eyes widening in surprise. He stared at Ji Hu, who looked back at him with a tilt of his head, his expression resembling that of a curious puppy.

"How do you feel?" Kim Jae-soo asked softly, his voice trembling with emotion. He moved closer, his eyes scanning Ji Hu's face for any signs of pain.

Ji Hu managed a weak smile, his hand still resting on Kim Jae-soo's head. "I'm okay, Jae-soo. Just a bit sore."

Kim Jae-soo's eyes filled with tears of relief. He gently took Ji Hu's hand, holding it tightly to reassure himself that Ji Hu was there and safe. "You are fine," he whispered, his voice cracking. It felt like he was reassuring himself.

Ji Hu squeezed his hand in return, his smile growing slightly stronger. "I'm here now," he said softly, adding in his head, 'and I'm not going anywhere.' Kim Jae-soo seemed to have forgotten his fear of being close to Ji Hu, still holding on tightly to his hand. Ji Hu felt at ease for the first time in what felt like forever.

The silence in the room was broken as the door opened to reveal his grandmother and father walking in. His grandmother was dressed plainly, with her son trailing behind her. "That stinky brat got into a fight, if I..." her words trailed off as she caught sight of her grandson holding hands with a ger—a very familiar-looking ger.

This interruption snapped Kim Jae-soo back to reality. He immediately let go of Ji Hu's hand and rushed out without looking at who had entered. Madam Bang, Ji Hu's grandmother, wanted to stop the ger, but he was too quick, and she couldn't even get the chance to thank that cute child.

"Mother, what is wrong?" Ji Hu's father asked, looking at his nearly speechless mother who had never been speechless in her life.

She ignored him and rushed to the seat beside Ji Hu. "Whose Family ger is that?" she inquired urgently.

Ji Hu smiled, despite his grandmother's disruption of his bonding moment with the always shy Kim Jae-soo. "That ger, Grandmother, is Kim Jae-soo. He's... important to me."

Madam Bang's eyes widened slightly, a mixture of surprise and curiosity crossing her features. "Important? How so?"

Ji Hu took a deep breath, glancing at his father, who looked equally curious. "When the time comes, you will know."

Madam Bang's expression softened slightly, but her eyes remained sharp. "Okay then."

After his grandmother and father left, Man Sung-ho entered Ji Hu's room. He had told the two gers to go home and rest. Sung-ho took a seat beside the silent Ji Hu, who was seated upright on the hospital bed with a bandage around his head. The doctor had said he had a minor concussion and needed rest, avoiding strenuous activities.

"What's wrong?" Man Sung-ho could see the wheels turning in his best friend's head.

Ji Hu looked at his friend and spoke. "There is something wrong with the second branch of the Baek family."

Man Sung-ho raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued. "What do you mean?"

Ji Hu sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I've been noticing some discrepancies in the financial reports and proposals they've been sending. They're trying to undermine our main branch, possibly with external help."

Sung-ho frowned. "External help? Do you have any idea who?"

Ji Hu's eyes darkened with determination. "I suspect the Choi family might be involved, but I need concrete evidence. I can't make a move until I'm sure."

Man Sung-ho nodded. "So, what's the plan?"

Ji Hu smiled faintly. "That's where you come in. I need you to keep an eye on things. We'll need to use every resource we have to gather information without drawing attention."

Man Sung-ho grinned. "This is would be fun."

Ji Hu felt a sense of relief. With Sung-ho's help, he could start piecing together the puzzle. They talked for a while longer, discussing their next steps and how to approach the situation without raising suspicion.

As they discussed, the conversation inevitably shifted to the topic of the gangsters who had attacked them. Man Sung-ho shared the latest information they had gathered, indicating a connection to the Lee family.

"Those thugs seem to have a connection to the Lee family," Man Sung-ho said, his tone serious. "But what does Na-ri and Dumpling have to do with the Lee family? That's what puzzles me."

Ji Hu rubbed his chin thoughtfully, pondering the situation. "Why would the Lee family target them? There is no reason, right?"

Man Sung-ho shook his head. "Not that I know of. Na-ri's family is powerful in their own right, but there's never been any indication of a feud between the Lee family and the An family."

Ji Hu frowned, thinking deeply. "Could it be that they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Or maybe there's something we're missing."

Man Sung-ho leaned back, his arms crossed. "It's possible. They might have been collateral damage, or there could be a deeper reason we haven't uncovered yet. Either way, we need to get to the bottom of it."

Ji Hu nodded. "Agreed. We can't afford to overlook any possibility. We need to protect them and find out why they were targeted. If the Lee family is involved, we have to figure out their motive."

Man Sung-ho sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It's like peeling an onion. The more layers we uncover, the more it stinks."

Ji Hu managed a small smile despite the gravity of the situation. "True. But we have to keep peeling, no matter how unpleasant it gets. We need to protect our own."

Man Sung-ho nodded. "I'll keep digging. We'll find out what's going on and put a stop to it."

Ji Hu's mind was racing. The attack on Na-ri and Jae-soo was a clear indication that their enemies were getting bolder. He couldn't afford to let his guard down.
