June 11th Continued...

Mac appears beside me, as the room erupts into, 'What the fuck's?' and Roxy bursts into tears. Freya tries to hold her and Jameson stands stoically over the two of them looking straight at me.

Clasping my hand Mac says, 'You're in the eye of the storm now Little Pet. This is the time to trust me.'

Jameson overhears and his eyes dart to me then Mac.

'I won't let you do it Jameson,' says Mac.

'What,' I ask. 'What's happening now?'

'Your family are coming for him,' he gestures his gun to Jameson. 'They think he's been hiding you. He'll give you up in return for his freedom.'

'No,' Jameson says, 'I'd never do that.'

There's a crunch of wheels on the gravel outside and the three of us freeze.

'I made a promise to her mother that I'd look after her,' Jameson says desperately.

'I'll look after her,' Mac says firmly. 'Tell them it was me that had her. You've just found the other key Jameson.' Mac's eyes flick to Roxy. 'She's a much better fit for the family business.'

There's a second crunch of wheels, then another and another.

Mac is pulling me to the door but I'm looking back at Jameson.

Jameson shouts, 'Go with Mac. If you ever trusted me, listen to me now. Get out of here.'

Mac pulls me through the door and down the stairs, turning sharply towards the back of the house. He frantically unlocks the bolts on the back door. 'C'mon, c'mon, c'mon,' he mutters under his breath. There's kicking behind us. The splintering of the wooden front door, more kicking. Mac throws the back door open and growls, 'We've got to run real fast. Can you do that?'

Before I can speak the front door is thrown open. It ricochets off the wall as a voice booms, 'Everybody, stay where you are! Hands in the air!'

Mac yanks me through the back door and barks, 'To the trees, now.'

As we run for the trees at the perimeter of the garden there's a gunshot inside the house. Mac keeps pulling me away but I stumble in the half light and fall, gashing my knee. He pulls me up and we keep running. Once we're at the trees, we slow down a little.

'Roxy,' I gasp, 'What about my sister.'

'She'll be ok,' he throws over his shoulder, tightening his grip on my hand.

'We've left her in a building with bullets firing.'

'Freya will handle it. She'll tell them who Roxy is.'

He pulls me harder, faster, it's too difficult to talk. Suddenly we break through the trees and come out into a clearing.

'The pick-up's over there,' he pants.

Opening the passenger door he pushes me in, slams it and runs to the other side, throwing himself into the driver's seat. Rattling the keys into the ignition he steps on the gas.

'But Roxy...' I yell as we speed down a tree lined road and swerve around a corner.

I'm thrown against the passenger door and he yells, 'Put your seat belt on!'

I pull at the seat belt and try to jam it into the holder thing but my hands are shaking too much. He keeps one hand gripped on the wheel and uses the other to connect my belt. My mind flashes back to the last time he used seat belts to restrain me and in the midst of all this chaos my pussy pulses. What the fuck is wrong with me? Then we're out onto the highway, speeding away from the shit show, but I have a sister and I've left her behind.

'I've got to go back,' I screech. 'I can't leave her. What if they hurt her?'

'They won't hurt her, they'll make her part of the family business. Replace one daughter with another.'

'You think?'

'She's a liability but she's smart, she can act, she can double, double cross. Of course they'll want her.'

My blood runs cold, I wouldn't wish that future on anyone. 'I can't let her take my place. It's not fair.'

He pulls off the road, parks wildly on the verge. 'Jesus Lilah. Don't you understand? With you gone Freya can have Roxy take your place and marry the two families together. She runs protection across The Bay, your father runs drugs far and wide. It's the perfect arrangement. The only fly in the ointment was Jameson hiding you while they were looking for you. I just resolved that by becoming the fall guy for him. You were Freya's bait to get them all together. She got Roxy to burn down her own club to buy her time so she could get everyone in one place. She would never have sold Roxy out, but now Roxy knows who her Father is the rules have changed. Roxy will see it as an opportunity, she'll want them and they'll want her. If you go back they'll take you both. They'll force you back to Scotland. You'll never be free, never be a poet or an artist and I'll never see you again. There would be no hope for us. All I'm living on is hope. We're not going back.'
