The background noises eventually subsided, and I knew I was deep asleep.
Even in my sleep, I could faintly feel his lips on my skin. I could swear he was dotting gentle kisses on my temple, my cheek, the side of my neck. And even if he wasn't, I was surely dreaming about it. It made me shiver slightly in my sleep.
His hands were still tracing soothing patterns on my sides, and his arms were wrapped tightly around me, holding me close. It was a comforting sensation, almost helping me sleep better.
Until it disappeared.
I subconsciously tried to shift closer to him but realized that I wasn't succeeding. I stirred in my sleep, searching for him again, but eventually accepted that he wasn't there.
My eyes slowly fluttered open. I saw that the car was now parked, completely dark and silent. The only sounds I could hear were the crickets in the trees and the faint rustling of the leaves.
"George?" I asked cautiously. No answer. "Nick?" I blinked a couple of times, waiting for my vision to adjust. Still no reaction, "Guys?"
No response.
The car was completely silent. It was empty. I sat up, now completely alert, and looked around, trying to make sense of the situation.
It wasn't an easy task.
Where were they?
Panic started to set in as I realized I was all alone and it was dark. I looked out the window, trying to see if there was any sign of them or at least any sign of life. But all I saw were outlines of trees casting scary shadows.
I started patting my surroundings, searching for my phone - the darkness making it impossible to see anything.
I was relieved when I finally found it stuck between George's suitcase and the car seat.I fumbled with my phone, trying to unlock it only to realize that it wasn't even my phone; it was Clay's. But it didn't matter because the password was my birthday and it was an emergency.
As soon as the screen lit up, I started dialing Nick's number. The phone rang once, twice, three times before going to voicemail. Then I called George. It didn't go to voicemail, but I heard it ring in the front seat.
Where the hell could they go?
My heart sank as I realized that I had been sitting here alone for ten minutes already, and been asleep for god knows how long.
As scared as I was, I had no other choice but to go outside.
I reached out to open the door, only to find it locked. I tried to unlock it, but the stupid thing wouldn't budge.
I panicked. I couldn't do anything. I was locked in the car. I quickly tried the other doors, along with every goddamn button I could press, but nothing seemed to work. I was trapped.
I started thinking about the possible scenarios.
What if the car broke down and they were looking for help? What if they got lost in the woods? What if they were hurt? What if they got attacked by a bear?
As the panic set in stronger, I realized that I might be claustrophobic. Or just dramatic. Or both. But there wasn’t any oxygen for me left to breathe, and the suitcase next to me was somehow getting bigger.
I tried to think of ways to get their attention. I thought about honking, but then I realized it might just attract more unwanted attention from the bear that was attacking them.
The windows were up, the doors were locked, the buttons I was pressing weren't working, and it was dark. What else was I supposed to do?
I hyperventilated in the car for another ten minutes until I saw a flash of light. It kept getting bigger and bigger until I saw the silhouette of the person behind it.
