Y/N didn't know what to do, after getting out of the taxi.
The driver had been unsure, confused about why Y/N had suddenly requested him to stop. He'd glanced at the map on his phone, before looking back at Y/N. "Are you sure this is where you want to get off?"
"Yes." Y/N had stepped out of the taxi, onto the small road they were using. His feet had met the edge, where plants grew through cracks in the concrete and struggled over the edge of the road. "Thank you." He'd paid much, much more than the fare - while it had been a long ride, Y/N had paid almost quadruple the amount courtesy of his parents.
The taxi driver had got the message. Take the money, and shut up. He nodded, counting the cash, and then the taxi had peeled away in a cloud of smoke and a sputtering noise.
Y/N stared around him.
Slap bang in the middle of Kochi Prefecture, far away from any major population centres, and surrounded by nothing but hills and forest for miles in each direction. The road Y/N stood on was small, overgrown with plants, nearly hidden behind greenery. No streetlights, no cars, no sign of humanity. The leaves above practically glowed, bright sunlight filtering through to tint the ground a light green.
It was a beautiful area. Trees surrounded the road on all sides, green hills barely visible through their foliage. A small dirt path led off the road, cutting a small line through the foliage.
Y/N followed it.
He barely had to go ten metres, trudging through dry soil and brushing away stray leaves, before he came to a clearing.
The forest gave way to grassland, a field of tall emerald strands going halfway up Y/N's thigh. He'd emerged into a sort of square area, with trees on the side he'd come from, and tall, steep hills forming three other walls. Two of them were cliffs of grey stone. The third was slightly different.
While the entire scene was beautiful, the building was anything but. Built into the hillside, it was unlike anything he'd seen. A block of solid concrete, no decorations except for a huge altar engraved into its side. And more strangely - only one window high up at the top, made from a darkened glass that Y/N couldn't see through.
This was Ascension.
As he approached, a door swung open in the side. Two men walked out, one in a lab coat, the other in a dark, almost military-like uniform. They waited patiently as Y/N approached.
And then Kuroi came from the door.
Y/N's eyes widened fractionally. He missed a step.
Kuroi smiled.
Just like before, it was a terrifying smile, all teeth, no humour. He stood there, an imposing figure compared to the two men either side of him. Black gelled hair, dark eyes, and a suit - he looked exactly like he did before. In the previous Ascension.
As Y/N walked closer, he realised something. Kuroi's nose... wasn't broken. It looked fully healed, not even crooked. Like Y/N's little rebellion, the ball he'd sent smashing into the man's nose, it did nothing. It was pointless.
Y/N walked right up to Kuroi, hiding the feeling of centipedes crawling around his stomach. He was scared, but at the same time... he was too desperate to acknowledge that. He didn't care about Kuroi. He didn't care what he'd done to him in the past - what he might do in the future. He just... he wanted Kuroi to train him. Staring up at the man, he cocked his head. "Hi."
"Hello."
The man's voice was smooth, with that signature soft, dangerous lilt. Kuroi smiled down at him, lips moving, teeth bared like some feral animal. "It's nice to see you again, little godling."
