There was a time when my life seemed perfect. My parents were successful harvesters, and my brother had perfected the art of hunting. I found myself learning to do things that every young woman in the village did; cook, weave, sew, and most importantly, to love.

You see, my brother, Isaac, was about three years older than I. Like I said earlier, he was a very skilled hunter. One of his friends, Niklaus Mikaelson, wasn't so fortunate. The other boys of the village whispered about him. They said his aim was petty and he lacked the agility to chase after his prey.

My brother, being the saint he is, took him under his wing. He would go out early in the morning and practice with the other lad. I never knew that was what he was up to until I decided to follow him.

"Isaac, where are you going?" I questioned him groggily. The two of us shared a room, and he had woken me when he got up. The sun was barely shining in the window, peeping over the horizon. We didn't have to be up for another hour or so.

"You needn't worry, sister," he shook his head. "I'm just going to get a head start on today's chores. Go back to sleep." With that, he left the room.

I fought the urge to dream again as I pushed myself up from the hay we called a bed. I crept out of the cottage, following my older sibling. I hid behind a tree as he came into a clearing.

I smiled as I noticed that he had brought his arrows and set up targets. He was practicing his archery. He made it seem so simple. Of course he had been working at it all this time. I found myself feeling surprised as a blonde head of hair joined him.

I knew who he was instantly, though we hadn't ever met. He was Niklaus Mikaelson, the man who couldn't kill to save his life. My brother acknowledged him by passing him a bow and arrow. My heart warmed as I realized what was going on.

He was training him.

My brother always did have such a kind heart. He took up for his friend whenever the others teased him. He would come home and talk about the adventures they shared together. My brother was his best friend.

"Okay, now you need to focus on the center of the target," my brother instructed him. "Think of it as the neck of the animal. The neck is always the most frail spot. Just steady, aim, and shoot!"

I suppressed a cheer as he did exactly as my brother said. The arrow went soaring before it hit perfectly slap dab in the middle. My brother clasped him on the back proudly. Niklaus beamed at his shot. He repeated the process before they began to pack up. That's when I let my presence be known.

"Good to know you're working on your chores," I joked as I walked out into the clearing. The two boys whipped their heads in my direction. Surprise etched their faces.

"Madeline," my brother gasped. "I thought I told you to go back to sleep? You weren't supposed to follow me."

"And I thought you also said you were going to work on your chores? Seems we're both doing things that we aren't supposed to be," I smirked, resting a hand on my hip. I glanced over at the blonde with him.

His look was indecipherable. I couldn't tell what was going through his mind, but I knew he was staring at me. I quickly looked away, feeling slightly uncomfortable.

"Sister, I was just helping him-"

"I know what you were doing," I interrupted him. "And I applaud you for doing so. You're doing a kind thing, you know?"

"I like to think myself as a kind person," he bragged.

"I wouldn't go that far," I giggled. I turned my attention back to his friend. He continued to stare at me, but this time a smile crept onto his lips. I felt myself mirroring him.

"Madeline, this is Niklaus," Isaac introduced us. "Niklaus, my sister, Madeline."

"It is a pleasure to meet you," I smiled lightly. I felt my face go red as he grabbed my hand, placing a soft kiss upon it.

"I assure you, the pleasure is all mine."

His voice was deeper than I had expected. I allowed myself to actually take in his appearance. His blonde hair curled quite adorably. His blue eyes sparkled like stars. He was very attractive, I had to admit.

"Yes, well you may believe that, but my sister can be quite the pest," he glared at the two of us. I backed away, seeing how protective my brother was getting.

I found myself looking around as silence fell over us. I slowly reached for the bow in my brother's hand. He eyed me warily as I picked up an arrow that had been tossed to the side.

"Madeline," Isaac began worriedly.

I ignored him, positioning it the way I had watched him. I had snuck out many times to watch the boys shoot. I mimicked their actions, sending it perfectly into the bullseye. I turned around with a grin.

"Maybe I should be the one teaching you, brother," I teased. I began to walk away from the two boys, but was stopped when someone grabbed my hand.

I turned around, surprised to see the blonde. His eyes met mine, making me feel slightly dizzy. He was so handsome. I couldn't concentrate. My eyes trailed down to our hands. They seemed to fit perfectly.

"You won't tell anyone about this?" He said, but it came out more of a question. I tore my eyes away from our hands, meeting his eyes yet again.

"I wouldn't dare," I promised. The boy let go of my hand, and I waited a second before turning onto my heel.

A/N: Yay for a new fanfic! Anyone else excited?

So, I just want to let you guys know that the first chapters of the book will be like WAY back in the past. It's crucial that the book is laid out this way due to the story line. I know that this chapter wasn't very long, and I do apologize.

I try to make my chapters at least 1000 words, which isn't a lot, but it's better than nothing. This one was just a few short I believe if you subtract this note. Anyways, I can't wait for you all to meet Madeline and fall in love with her character. She is very sarcastic and witty; part of the reason why Klaus falls in love with her himself.

I hope you enjoyed it so far! Please comment, vote, and follow me! I would really appreciate it. Oh, and I am an author who is persuaded to update faster when my readers interact with me! So like I said, follow, vote, and comment!
