edith sat in the driftwater drawing-room, all by her lonesome. dianna was at one of her botanist lectures and alison had slept in, which was a given after last night's disaster - to put it simply, the countess' head was in a whirl.

"edith! edith!" samuel's voice echoes through the hall as he makes his way towards the drawing-room, making the former stand immediately.

"samuel?" she speaks in confusion once he steps into the room.

"here." he passes edith the newest whistledown sheet, to which she thinks 'what has pen said now?'.

"it may come as a suprise to all-" edith mumbles aloud, as she reads the sentence that samuel was pointing to on the sheet. "-that mr bridgerton's rumoured assistance in helping miss featherington find a husband has, instead, led to the two of them finding each other..." the girl's eyes grow wide and she eventually lets out a scream of excitement, before tackling samuel into a hug. "pen is to be married!"

"what is all the racket about?" alison strolls into the drawing-room, still in her night clothes and rubbing her eyes.

"goodness, you do not look well at all." samuel tells her, attempting to offer his concern - though, doing a terrible job of it.

"you don't say." alison replies, as sarcastically as ever

"al, have you not slept?" edith places the sheet down and walks towards her older sister.

"i did, eventually." the countess sighs, her braided hair was a mess and she had significant dark circles under her eyes. "now, neither of you answered my question. what was the screaming about?"

"pen and colin are engaged!" edith squeals, fighting the urge to jump up and down.

"what?!" alison gasps. "this is amazing! but, i had no idea that they-"

edith cuts her off with a shake of her head. "me neither, well, not of colin's feelings anyway."

"we must congratulate them. tomorrow. they shall need a day to process it first, no doubt." alison chuckles.

"yes." edith nods in agreement. "and, what shall you do today?"

"i... shall go back to bed." alison's smile falters. "we can promenade later. lovely to see you, samuel." she tells him, before walking out of the room again.

"is she okay?" he asks edith.

"she will be." the youngest sighs. "she just needs time, and to write more poetry." she sits back down, offering samuel a seat next to her. "never fear, once you go i shall not leave her side."

the entire situation couldn't help but be ironic for edith as, exactly a year ago now, she had been in the same position with edwina; refusing to leave her bed on account of being too lovesick. though, she hated that this was the cost for alison finally figuring out her feelings for benedict.
